Hot Shooting Leads No. 13 Vanderbilt By Troy, 78-50 1-2-05 1/2/2005 NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Senior forward Ashley Earley scored a game-high 22 points and grabbed seven rebounds to lead four Vanderbilt players in double figures and the No. 13 Commodores continued their hot shooting in the second half for the second straight game hitting 69.6 percent of their shots as VU (11-1) downed Troy, 78-50, Sunday afternoon inside Memorial Gymnasium. Box Score | Photo Gallery Sophomore forward Carla Thomas added 15 points and senior guard Abi Ramsey added 14 points including four three pointers. Ramsey now needs two three-pointers to become the all-time leader in Vanderbilt history in three-pointers made. The sharp-shooter from Monteagle, Tenn., has 202 career three-pointers. Dee Davis chipped in 12 points and nine assists. Vanderbilt finished the game shooting 58.2 percent and 44.4 percent from three-point range. Vanderbilt shot close to 70 percent in the second half. The Commodores extended their 39-21 halftime lead with a 13-9 run to go ahead 52-30 with 16:09 left. For the second straight game, Earley rattled off more than 10 points during a six minute stretch. Earley scored 12 straight points beginning at the 12:49 mark. Her last basket at the 7:19 mark gave Vanderbilt a 68-44 lead. The ‘Dores built their largest margin on a three-pointer from Caroline Williams with 3:03 remaining in the game. Ramsey hit three three-pointers in the first half in helping the Commodores to a 39-21 halftime lead. She scored 11 of her points in the half. Carla Thomas added 10 first-half points. Vanderbilt shot 50 percent in the first stanza and forced 10 first-half turnovers while holding the Trojans to 33.3 percent from the field. The Trojans took their only lead of the game on a three-pointer from Audrey Muse with 18:12 left in the first half. VU then used a 12-2 run to go ahead 14-5 with 14:18 left in the half. Davis scored four points during a 14-5 VU run giving the ‘Dores a 28-10 lead with 7:04 left. Ramsey’s third three-pointer of the first half gave the Commodores’ its largest lead of the half, 39-19. Amy Lewis led Troy with 17 points on 7-of-9 shooting. The Trojans shot 46.4 percent in the second half. Vanderbilt hosts Atlantic Coast Conference member NC State Thursday at 7 p.m. The ‘Dores open Southeastern Conference play next Sunday Jan. 9 against South Carolina for “Jam the Gym.” The South Carolina game is fan appreciation day.
