Commodores Conquer Cajuns, 71-44 NASHVILLE (AP) – Freshman Alex Gordon scored a season-high 17 points and Vanderbilt won its 22nd consecutive non-conference home game with a 71-44 victory over Louisiana-Lafayette on Sunday night. Box Score | Photo Gallery Corey Smith scored 13 points off the bench and Julian Terrell scored 10 points and grabbed five rebounds for Vanderbilt (9-4). Vanderbilt’s bench outscored Louisiana-Lafayette’s 44-9. Brian Hamilton and Tiras Wade each scored 15 points for Louisiana-Lafayette (5-6). Hamilton and Wade scored the first 26 points of the game for the Ragin’ Cajuns. Louisiana-Lafayette struggled shooting the ball all night, connecting on just 29 percent from the field, 14 percent from 3-point range and 39 percent from the foul line. Vanderbilt’s bench provided the necessary spark in the second half. Leading 37-24, Vanderbilt coach Kevin Stallings took all five starters out of the game after some sloppy play. The five reserves went on a 10-0 run in a four-minute span to push the lead to 47-24. Dan Cage and Smith had five points each during the run. Vanderbilt jumped out to a 21-3 lead in the first half, with the final 13 points coming from Gordon. The freshman hit four three-pointers, getting fouled on the fourth, in a span of 2:23 that closed out a 19-0 run. Louisiana-Lafayette narrowed the gap to 32-16 at halftime. Vanderbilt will enter Southeastern Conference play on a five-game winning streak when it hosts Alabama on Wednesday night. The Commodores have one non-conference game remaining as they will host Texas Pan-American on Feb. 7. |
