MALIBU, Calif. – Senior forward Ashley Earley scored a game-high 20 points and No. 13 Vanderbilt held Pepperdine to 18 second-half points as the Commodores captured the championship of the Hilton Woodland Hills Beach Classic knocking off the host team Pepperdine, 78-46, Tuesday night in Firestone Fieldhouse.

Sophomore guard Dee Davis added 19 points and five assists as she was named the tournament’s most valuable player.

Abi Ramsey finished with 14 points hitting four three-pointers for the Commodores. Earley joined Davis on the all-tournament team after going 9-of-11 from the field and grabbed six rebounds. Vanderbilt shot 49.1 percent in the game and held the Waves to 28.6 percent from the field. The ‘Dores forced Pepperdine into 31 turnovers and recorded 16 steals led by Davis’ four. Katie Antony led the team with a career-high seven rebounds.

Earley and Ramsey led a 12-2 Commodore run out of the locker room in the first six minutes of the second half. Earley scored four points and Ramsey hit one of her three-pointers as VU led 50-32 with 10:51 left.

Another Earley lay-up put VU ahead, 60-36, with 8:29 remaining. The Commodores extended their lead to 71-42 after Caroline Williams drained a three-pointer and Nicole Jules added a free throw. Another three-pointer from Williams gave the ‘Dores their largest lead, 76-46 with 1:10 left.

Vanderbilt held on for a 38-28 halftime lead. Ramsey scored 11 points in the first half including three three-pointers while Davis added 10 first-half points. Antony registered a career-high in the first half grabbing the seven rebounds to lead the Commodores. Pepperdine connected on 12-of-15 free throws and out-rebounded the Commodores, 19-14.

Pepperdine jumped out to a 10-6 lead in the first three minutes before Vanderbilt went on a 19-0 run to go ahead, 25-10, with 10:32 remaining. Ramsey hit two three-pointers during the run and Thomas scored four points the stretch. Thomas’ two free throws gave the Commodores the 15-point advantage.

Vanderbilt built its largest lead of the first half at 31-13 at the 8:06 mark. Davis hit a three-pointer putting the ‘Dores up big. Pepperdine chipped away at its deficit and trailed 34-25 at the 2:31 mark after Teiosha George made two free throws, but Earley snapped the run with a lay-up as VU led, 38-28, at the half.

Lauren Wenski led Pepperdine with 15 points. Jennifer Lacy added 14 points while George finished with 10 points.

Vanderbilt takes time off to celebrate the holidays. The Commodores return to action Dec. 30 at New Orleans.
