Malibu, Calif. – Sophomore guard Dee Davis matched a career-high with 21 points and No. 14 Vanderbilt outscored BYU, 44-20, in the second half as the Commodores knocked off the Cougars, 86-47, Monday evening at Firestone Fieldhouse in the first game of the Hilton Woodland Hills Beach Classic hosted by Pepperdine.

The Commodores will now await the outcome of the game between Wright State and Pepperdine. If Pepperdine wins, the Commodores will face the Waves at 9:30 p.m. (CST) Tuesday. If Wright State wins, Vanderbilt will face Wright State at 7:30 p.m. (CST).

Vanderbilt forced BYU into 24 turnovers. Davis led four Vanderbilt players in double figures. Sophomore Cherish Stringfield came of the bench to score 16 points while Carla Thomas finished with 15 points. Ashley Earley added 14 points and grabbed a team-high eight rebounds. Vanderbilt shot 48.6 percent for the game including 56.3 percent in the second half. The Commodores connected on 10-of-20 from three-point range led by Davis who went 4-of-7 and Stringfield who hit 3-of-4.

The ‘Dores opened the second half with a 16-7 run to go ahead 60-34 with 13:21 left in the game. Davis scored six of her points during the run. Another jumper from Davis and a three-pointer from Abi Ramsey put VU ahead, 72-38 with 9:06 remaining. A three-pointer from Caroline Williams increased the lead to 78-41 with 5:18 remaining in the game. The Commodores finished the last five minutes with an 8-6 run to finish out the scoring.

Vanderbilt jumped out to a 42-27 halftime lead behind 11 points from Earley. The Commodores scored 21 points in the first half off 16 BYU turnovers. Stringfield added nine points in the half.

The Commodores opened the game with a 13-3 run. BYU trimmed its deficit to 13-7 with 13:42 remaining in the half. A three-pointer from Davis snapped the Cougars’ run and put the Commodores ahead, 16-7 with 12:47 left. BYU made another run and got within 16-13 at the 10:22 mark, but a free throw from Earley capped off an 11-3 Vanderbilt run to put the Commodores ahead 27-16 with 7:59 left before halftime. The Cougars got within 32-24, but Stringfield hit two three-pointers in the final two minutes of the half helping the ‘Dores to the halftime advantage.

Katie Antony scored nine points and added five steals. Williams finished the game with six points for the Commodores.

Ambrosia Anderson led BYU with eight points. BYU shot 47.8 percent in the first half, but Vanderbilt held the Cougars to a 26.1 field goal percentage in the second half.
