No. 14 Vanderbilt Heads West to Take on BYU in Hilton Woodland Hills Beach Classic 12-20-04 12/20/2004 Vanderbilt takes on BYU in the opening round of the Hilton Woodland Hills Beach Classic hosted by Pepperdine Monday night at 7:30 p.m. (CST). Game Notes | Live Stats The Commodores had last week off for finals after knocking off Saint Louis, 94-51, back on Dec. 12. Against Saint Louis, senior forward Ashley Earley scored a team-high 20 points and Carla Thomas chipped in 19 points to lead Vanderbilt to the 94-51 home-win over the Billikens. VU extended its home nonconference winning streak to 48 games with the win. Senior Abi Ramsey (11 pts), Nicole Jules (10 pts) and Davis (10 pts) all finished in double figures as every Commodore scored in a game for the first time this season. On the season, Vanderbilt continues to shoot over 50 percent (.527). VU is forcing teams into 28.4 turnovers per outing. The Commodores have four players averaging in double figures led by Earley who leads the team averaging 19.6 points and 10 boards per game. VU also has been an unselfish team as the Commodores are dishing out 20.8 assists per game. If Vanderbilt wins the opener, VU will take on the host team Pepperdine at 9:30 p.m. (CST) Tuesday. If the Commodores lose, VU plays Wright State at 7:30 p.m. (CST). BYU is coming off a 76-73 win over USC at home. Julie Sullivan scored a game-high 21 points to lead three Cougars in double figures and BYU shot 55.3 percent from the floor. Danielle Cheesman posted a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Ambrosia Anderson had 15 points and a game-high nine rebounds for the Cougars. Anderson leads the team in scoring off the bench while averaging 13.1 ppg. Kristen Kozlowski averages 12.0 ppg. Cheesman is the team’s top rebounder averaging 9.4 rebounds per game. BYU holds teams to 60.2 ppg . The Cougars’ lone two losses have come against Arizona and at Hawaii. This is the first ever meeting between the Cougars and the Commodores. Vanderbilt has only played one team from the Mountain West. VU is 2-1 all-time against Mountain West member Utah with the last meeting coming during the 1990-91 season. Wright State (5-4) fell on the road at Cal State Northridge, 84-74, in the Raiders last outing. Rhea Mays scored a team-high 20 points to lead five players in double figures. Brittney Whiteside added 19 points. Wright State shot 45.2 percent in the game, Cal State out-rebounded the Raiders, 41-29, and forced 19 turnovers. Whiteside leads four Raiders averaging double figures. She averages 15.4 ppg and 8.3 rebounds per outing. Jeanette Woodberry scores 13.9 ppg. As a team, Wright State shoots .411 while scoring 70.9 ppg. Vanderbilt and Wright State have met once on the basketball court. The Commodores defeated the Raiders, 88-49, during the 1989-90 season. Pepperdine (2-7) is hosting its second holiday tournament of the season. The Waves hosted the Four Points LAX Turkey Shootout during Thanksgiving. Pepperdine hasn’t played a game in 10 days. The Waves last played on Dec. 10 losing at nationally ranked Stanford, 85-49. Senior Jennifer Lacy leads the in scoring averaging 14.6 points a contest. Sophomore Lauren Wenski ranks second on the team in scoring at 9.6 per game. Vanderbilt and Pepperdine have never met on the basketball court. The Commodores have played three schools from the West Coast Conference in the program’s history and are 3-0 against the WCC. VU defeated Portland during the 2000-01 season, 97-56; San Francisco during the 1998-99 season, 96-62; and Loyola Marymount during the 1990-91, 81-75. |
