Commodores End Season with a 2-0 Loss at #3 SMU in Missouri Valley Conference Tournament First Round Action

Dallas, Texas — The Vanderbilt Commodore men’s soccer team ended its season tonight with a 2-0 loss at #3 SMU in first round action of the State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Tournament.

The Commodores finish the season with a 7-10-1 record. SMU, who won its ninth consecutive contest, improves to 14-3 and advances to the State Farm MVC Tournament semifinal game next weekend.

The Mustangs scored seven minutes into the game when Mynor Gonzalez scored his fifth goal of the season from 25-yards out on a free kick. SMU extended its lead with just under seven minutes remaining in the game when Alex Smith hit a curling free kick from 20-yards out that went untouched into the goal.

SMU outshot the Commodores 16-5. Freshman Joe Germanese totaled three shots for Vanderbilt, including one on goal. Patrick Ryan and Austin Woolard each totaled one shot.

VU goalkeeper Kenny Schoeni faced six shots on goal and numbered four saves. SMU’s T.J. Tomasso had one save in the contest earning his seventh shutout of the season.
