Siena Holds Off UT-Martin, 60-57; Faces Commodores in Championship Game Saturday

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Sophomore guard Cherish Stringfield came off the bench to score a career-high 19 points to lead five Vanderbilt players in double figures as the No. 14 Commodores (3-0) registered their second 100-point game of the season defeating Rhode Island 108-53 Friday afternoon in the opening round of the Vanderbilt Thanksgiving Tournament.

Senior guard Abi Ramsey added 18 points for Vanderbilt, which plays Siena Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m. in the championship game. Siena (1-2) held on to defeat UT-Martin, 60-57, in the tournament’s second game.

Senior Ashley Earley scored 15 points and fell two rebounds short of her third straight double-double. Sophomore Carla Thomas had 14 points while fellow sophomore Dee Davis finished with 12 points and nine assists.

Vanderbilt (3-0) dominated from the start, shooting 64 percent in the first half to open up a 54-24 halftime lead.Ramsey hit four three-pointers in the first half as VU was 8-of-11 from behind the arc in the first stanza. Thomas had 12 first-half points.

Vanderbilt was 12-of-18 from long distance in the game, led by Ramsey’s five 3-pointers. VU shot 62.5 percent from the field and 66.7 percent from three-point. The Commodores forced Rhode Island into 30 turnovers and recorded 15 steals.

Rhode Island (1-2) shot just 34 percent from the floor and was 2-of-11 on 3-pointers. The team was led by Tanya Rhodes’ 15 points. Peta Kneen added 12 points.

Rhode Island will play UT-martin the consolation game at 2 p.m. Saturday afternoon.

Siena 60, UT-Martin 57

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Siena’s Laura Menty posted a double-double with 20 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Saints into the Championship game of the Vanderbilt Thanksgiving Tournament with a 60-57 win over UT-Martin. Katelyn Dooley aded 12
points for the Saints.

With the Siena trailing 57-56 with 43 seconds remaining, Dooley connected on two free throws to put the Saints ahead, 58-57. After UT-Martin’s Chandra Carey and Danielle Page both missed jumpers, Dooley hit two more free throws with nine seconds left. Page missed a three-pointer at the buzzer as Siena held on for the win.

The Skyhawks overcame a 24-12 deficit with a 10-0 run in the first half. Deina Willingham made a free throw with 46 seconds remaing pulling UTM within, 24-22. Lauren Surber’s basket gave Siena a 26-22 halftime lead.

UTM’s Andreika Jackson scored 17 of her game-high 22 points in the second half to lead the Skyhawks. Jackson’s two free throws with 10:11 left in the game gave UT-Martin its first lead of the game, 42-40. Siena battled back to take a 52-50 lead with 5:35 left. A jumper by Jackson gave the Skyhawks a 57-56 advantage with 1:11 left in the game, but Dooley’s free throws sealed the win for Siena.

Siena shot 39.2 percent from the field while UT-Martin shot 37.7 percent.
