(AP) — Corey Smith led six Vanderbilt players into double digits with a career-high 21 points as Vanderbilt beat Cal State Northridge 93-75 in the second round of the Las Vegas Holiday Invitational. Mario Moore scored 16 while Shan Foster and Jason Holwerda each added 11 points for Vanderbilt (3-0). Vanderbilt shot 59 percent from the floor and 50 percent from three. Freshman Calvin Chitwood led CS Northridge (0-2) with 21 points, giving him 40 points in his first two college games against Vanderbilt and Oklahoma. Joseph Frazier had 15 points and Terrell Jones had 10 for the Matadors. The Las Vegas Holiday Invitational is using an experimental three-point distance of 20 feet, 6 inches, which is nine inches further than the NCAA distance, but that has not bothered Vanderbilt. In two games with the experimental distance, Vanderbilt has shot 50 percent, making 27-of-54 three-point attempts. Vanderbilt enjoyed an 83-54 lead with 5:43 to play, but CS Northridge went on a 13-0 run, prompting Vanderbilt coach Kevin Stallings to put his starting five back in the game with 3:17 to play. Vanderbilt blew the game open early, sprinting out to a 15-2 lead and extending it to 29-6 midway through the first half. Smith had 13 points at the half and Vanderbilt made 13 of its first 18 shots en route to shooting 69 percent in the first half, including 57 percent from three. Vanderbilt and Cal State Northridge will play two more games in the Las Vegas Holiday Invitational on Nov. 26-27 in Las Vegas. Vanderbilt will take on Southern Illinois and Cal State Northridge will face Tennessee State in the third round on Friday. Final round opponents are to be determined. Vanderbilt, which has won 15 straight regular season non-conference games, improved to 46-3 against non-conference opponents at Memorial Gym under Stallings. In its three wins this season, Vanderbilt has not trailed. |
