Moore, Holwerda Lift Vanderbilt Past Tennessee State, 87-65

Mario Moore led all scorers with 19 points and Jason Holwerda tied a career high with 17 points as Vanderbilt pushed past Tennessee State 87-65, in the opening round of the Las Vegas Holiday Invitational, Sunday, Nov. 21 at Memorial Gymnasium.

The Commodores (2-0) converted 14 three-pointers while shooting 50.0 percent from beyond the arc. Moore and Holwerda had a trio of three-pointers each.

All 11 Commodores that entered the game scored. Alex Gordon and Dan Cage added nine points apiece, while Corey Smith and Dawid Przybyszewski contributed eight points each.

Vanderbilt led the entire game, but Tennessee State (0-2) fought tough throughout the first half. The Tigers cut a 10-point Commodore advantage to two points with 7:42 remaining in the first half. Vanderbilt managed to stretch a four-point cushion with 4:29 left in the first half to 14 points at intermission thanks to two lay-ups and a three-pointer by Moore and five points from Holwerda. Holwerda scored 15 of his 17 points in the first half.

Moore netted 11 of his 19 points in the second stanza, helping the Commodores build a lead of 17 points at 60-43 at 12:55. Cage and Gordon helped push VU’s lead to as many as 25 in the final minutes.

Three Tigers scored in double figures led by Rod Flowers’ 18 points. Eric King and Wayne Arnold posted 12 points each.

The Commodores play host to Cal State Northridge in second round action Tuesday, Nov. 23 at 7 p.m. Vanderbilt then travels to Las Vegas for third and fourth round play. The Commodores will face Southern Illinois on Nov. 26 (7 p.m. CT) and then play a yet to be determined foe on Nov. 27.
