Commodores Open Women’s Basketball Season With 102-47 Win 11-19-04 11/19/2004 NASHVILLE — The 13th-ranked Vanderbilt Commodores won their season opener tonight, 102-47, against the St. Francis Red Flash. Box Score | Photo Gallery Sophomore Carla Thomas led the Commodore offensive attack with 23 points, followed by senior Ashley Earley, who turned in a double-double. She had 11 rebounds, tied her career-high with 22 points, and was eight for nine in free throw attempts. Sophomore Dee Davis scored 21 points, besting her previous career high by five points. She was two for two behind the three-point arc. The Dores jumped out to an early and commanding lead, pouring in 39 first-half points to St. Francis’ 16. Twenty-five of those points came off turnovers. Including three steals in the first half from Earley, two from Davis, and one apiece from freshman Katie Eggers and sophomore Jenn Hall. Overall, Vanderbilt forced 32 turnovers and had 17 steals. Earley led the way with four, while Davis and sophomore Katie Antony contributed three each. Tonight’s matchup was the first game in a doubleheader to launch the women’s and men’s 2004-05 basketball seasons. The Commodore women’s basketball team next travels to Georgia to play Savannah State on Monday, Nov. 22. They return home Nov. 26–27 to host the Vanderbilt Tournament. |
