Vanderbilt Opens Season Against Talented Toledo Unit Friday Vanderbilt opens the 2004-05 season by playing host to Toledo Friday, Nov. 19 at Memorial Gymnasium. Tip-off is set for 30 minutes following the Commodore women’s basketball season opener against St. Francis (Pa.) that starts at 6 p.m. CT. Game Notes Prior to the men’s tip-off attention will be directed to a new banner hanging in the Memorial Gymnasium rafters recognizing Vanderbilt’s run to the 2004 NCAA Tournament Sweet 16. The 2004-05 Commodores are coming a pair of exhibition wins over Panamericana (82-54) and Alabama-Huntsville (68-53). During exhibition play, Vanderbilt showed a balanced attack as at least four Commodores scored in double figures in each game. Jason Holwerda led all VU players, averaging 12.5 points a contest. Vanderbilt will face a talented Rockets squad that is picked to win the Mid-American Conference. The Rockets rank ninth nationally in the Mid-Major Top 25 by Collegeinsider.com. All five Toledo starters return, including standout Keith Triplett. The Commodores have won 14 consecutive non-conference home games and 30 of their past 31 contests against non-Southeastern Conference foes. VU also has won eight consecutive season openers and 12 consecutive home openers. Toledo marks the first of five opponents Vanderbilt will face over the next eight days. The Commodores compete in the Las Vegas Holiday Invitational (Nov. 21-27). VU plays Tennessee State (Nov. 21) and Cal State Northridge (Nov. 23) at Memorial Gym before traveling to Las Vegas. VU will face Southern Illinois (Nov. 26) before playing a yet to be determine foe on Nov. 27. Both games in Las Vegas will be played at the Valley Athletic Complex. |
