NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Vanderbilt head women’s basketball coach Melanie Balcomb announced today that Amy Malo (Fairmont, Minn.), Holly Rogers (Cleveland, Tenn.), Christina Wirth (Mesa, Ariz.) and Jennifer Risper (Moreno, Calif.) have signed national letters of intent to join the Commodores for the 2005-06 season.

“We’re really pleased with the class we signed,” Balcomb said. “It’s a very strong class. Their strength and versatility position-wise will help us right away. It’s a class that can make an impact immediately and fill a lot of gaps for us.”

Wirth highlights the group. A 6-1, guard/forward who preps at Seton Catholic High School, she averaged 23.3 points and 11.6 rebounds as a junior for Seton Catholic and was selected for to the USA Junior National Basketball squad. She was named the Arizona Republic’s Player of the Year for classes 1A-3A and the East Valley Tribune 4A-2A Girls’ Basketball Player of the Year the past two seasons.

Rogers, a 5-9 guard, is the lone in-state player to sign with the Commodores. She helped lead Cleveland High School to the Class AAA State finals in 2004. Rogers averaged 19 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists per game for the Blue Raiders. She was named to the TSWA AAA All-State team in 2004 and also earned area player of the year honors last season. She was named Street & Smith Honorable Mention All-America from 2002-04.

Malo, a 6-3 forward/center, is a senior at Fairmont High School in Minn. She averaged nearly a double-double with 12.4 points and 9.6 rebounds per game. She set the school record for blocks in a single game (10) and pulled down another school record 20 rebounds in a single-game. She averaged 2.6 blocks per game last season. Malo also helped her AAU team Minnesota Stars to national recognition.

Risper, a 5-9 combo guard who is a senior at Canyon Springs High School, averaged 20.3 points, 6.7 rebounds, 3.9 assists and 3.6 steals per game as a junior. She was selected first team All-CIF as a junior and named to the all-state teams both her sophomore and junior years.
