Vanderbilt Women Ranked 13th in Associated Press Preseason Poll 11-9-04 11/9/2004 Dores Now Ranked No. 13 in Both National Preseason Polls Vanderbilt earned its second preseason ranking of the 2004-05 women’s basketball season. The Associated Press currently has the Commodores No. 13 in its preseason poll. The Dores also are ranked 13th in the ESPN/USA TODAY/WBCA Coaches’ Preseason Poll which was released last week. It is the highest ranking by a Commodore team in women’s basketball in either the coaches’ poll or Associated Press poll during the preseason. Vanderbilt is one of four SEC teams ranked in the preseason top 25. Tennessee is No. 1 in the poll followed by No. 2 Texas while No.3 LSU and No. 5 Georgia round out the group. Defending champion Connecticut is ranked No.4. Duke, Stanford, Baylor, North Carolina, Notre Dame and Ohio State round out the top 10 with the last two tied for 10th. Texas Tech is No.12 followed by Vanderbilt, Minnesota and Michigan State. The Commodores are picked to finish third in the SEC ahead of Georgia and behind Tennessee and LSU. Sophomore forward Carla Thomas, the second freshman ever to earn SEC Tournament MVP honors, was named first-team preseason All-SEC. Vanderbilt opened the 2004-05 season with a 72-42 exhibition win over the Ohio Legends Tuesday. VU continues exhibition play Thursday night when the Dores host EA Sports Team at 7 p.m. in Memorial Gymnasium. The Commodores play their first regular season game at home on Nov. 19 against St. Francis (Pa.). |
