VU Women’s Basketball Ranked 13th In Coaches’ Poll 11-5-04 11/5/2004 Coming off a season which featured a Southeastern Conference Tournament championship and a trip to the Sweet 16, Vanderbilt finds itself ranked No. 13 in the 2004-05 USA TODAY/ESPN/WBCA DIVISION I Preseason Coaches’ Poll. It is the highest ranking by a Commodore team in women’s basketball in either the coaches’ poll or Associated Press poll during the preseason. Vanderbilt is one of four SEC teams ranked in the preseason top 25. Tennessee is No. 1 in the poll followed by No. 2 LSU while No. 5 Georgia rounds out the group. Defending champion Connecticut is ranked No.4. Duke, Stanford, Baylor, Ohio State and Texas Tech round out the top 10 with the last two tied for ninth. Duke is No.11 followed by North Carolina, Vanderbilt, Minnesota and Purdue. The Commodores are picked to finish third in the SEC ahead of Georgia and behind Tennessee and LSU. Sophomore forward Carla Thomas, the second freshman ever to earn SEC Tournament MVP honors, was named first-team preseason All-SEC. Vanderbilt opened the 2004-05 season with a 72-42 exhibition win over the Ohio Legends Tuesday. The Commodores play their first regular season game at home on Nov. 19 against St. Francis (Pa.). |
