Vanderbilt Plays Host To Western Kentucky For Senior Day Kickoff is Tonight at 7 p.m.
The Vanderbilt men’s soccer team plays host to Western Kentucky this evening for Senior Day. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. CT.

Commodore Seniors Honored The Commodores will honor seniors Jamie Burns, Adam Guzzo and Brendan Matthews prior to tonight’s game. Burns is a team captain who led the MVC in saves per game last season after transferring from Trinity College. He also earned conference player of the week honors and recorded his first career shutout against East Carolina. Guzzo sat out last season as a redshirt after transferring from Rhodes College. This season, he teamed with Kenny Schoeni for the team’s first shutout of the season vs. Drury. Matthews is a four-year letterwinner for the Commodores who has played in 54 games. His first career goal was in an overtime victory vs. Tulsa in his freshman season.
Vanderbilt vs. Western Kentucky This is the 26th game of the series with Western Kentucky holding a 15-9-1 lead in the series. The Hilltoppers have won the last four consecutive games and five of the last six meetings. Last season, Western Kentucky defeated the Commodores, 4-0, in Bowling Green, Ky. In the last meeting in Nashville (2002), the Hilltoppers defeated the Commodores, 2-1 in double overtime.
Commodores Enter the VU Record Book for First Time in Seven Years Junior John Krause is tied for fifth in the VU record book for goals in a season with 12. He is also tied for seventh place in the season points list with 27 (12G, 3A). He is the first Commodore since 1997 to break into the VU Single Season Record Book. Freshman Joe Germanese and junior Patrick Ryan are one assist shy of eighth place on the VU Season Assist List. Germanese and Ryan total six assists this season.
Vanderbilt Wins First Two MVC Games of Season Vanderbilt is 2-6 in Missouri Valley Conference action. The Commodores started MVC play with a 2-0 record for the third time since joining the league in 1997. In 1998, VU started league play with a 2-0 record, including a victory over regular season champion Bradley (6-1-1) and Eastern Illinois. In 2000, VU was 2-0 with wins over Evansville and Western Kentucky. VU’s two league wins are more than the 2002 and 2003 season total combined. Vanderbilt won one league game in 2002 and was 0-7-2 last season.
Vanderbilt Currently Eighth in the MVC with One Game to Go The Commodores are currently in eighth place in the Missouri Valley Conference with one regular season remaining. Eastern Illinois is ninth with a 1-5-1 record (two games remaining) and Western Kentucky is 10th with a 1-6-1 record. Evansville is just ahead of Vanderbilt with a 2-5-0 league record with two games remaining. Standings and remaining games in the MVC are located on page 4. Eight teams advance to the MVC Tournament with the top four seeds hosting playins Nov. 5-6. The semifinal and championship games will be hosted by Creighton, Nov. 12 & 14.
Vanderbilt and the Midwest Region The Commodores were ranked for the three consecutive weeks in the Midwest Region. After going undefeated in four consecutive games, VU broke into the regional rankings Sept. 28 at #10 and moved to #6 Oct. 4. VU was #10 Oct. 12. It was the first ranking for the Commodores since Tim McClement’s took over as head coach in 2002. Seven Commodore opponents are ranked in this week’s Midwest Region Poll.

Double-Digit Commodores The Commodores have more than doubled their offensive output from last season. Vanderbilt totals 88 points in 16 games this season. Last season, Vanderbilt totaled 42 points in 18 contests. The Commodores have already tripled their 2003 assists total with 30 this season compared to last year’s 10 assists. Three Commodores total double digit points this season led by John Krause with 27. Joe Germanese totals 14, followed by Josh Medcalf with 11. Last season in 18 games, only three players totaled at least five points led by Jimmy Stone with nine.
Commodore MVC Leaders (As of Oct. 25) ? The Commodores are tied for fifth in the league with 29 goals and are sixth in total points with 83. ? John Krause is second in the MVC in points with a total of 27 for a 1.69 game average. He leads the league with four game-winning goals. He is second with 12 goals. ? Joe Germanese is 10th in the league with six assists. ? Goalkeeper Kenny Schoeni is eighthwith a .691 save percentage, fourth with 4.33 saves per game, third with 65 saves and 10th with two shutouts.
Vanderbilt Finishes Second in Vanderbilt PUMA Classic The Commodores went undefeated in the Vanderbilt PUMA Classic with a 3-3 tie vs. Northwestern and a 1-0 double overtime win over Memphis. Northwestern was the champion of the Classic. Memphis finished in third place followed by Eastern Illinois. John Krause Named Missouri Valley Conference Offensive Player of the Week — 9/20 Junior John Krause was named the Missouri Valley Conference’s Offensive Player of the Week Monday (Sept. 20). It is a first-time honor for Krause and the first for a Commodore offensive player in five years. Travis Weeks received the honor in 1999 for the Commodores. Krause led the Commodores to an undefeated week and second place finish in the Vanderbilt University PUMA Classic. He totaled three goals, including a game-winner vs. Memphis in double overtime (1-0). He scored two goals vs. Northwestern, including the first score of the game and another in regulation (74:09) that tied the game at 3-3. After a scoreless game through regulation vs. Memphis, Krause took a feed from Josh Medcalf and Patrick Ryan for the game winner from 18-yards out at the 101:30 mark. He gave Vanderbilt a 1-0 lead vs. Northwestern and then tied the game at the 74:09 mark (3-3) to lead Vanderbilt to a 1-0-1 record for the week. He was named to the All-Tournament team totaling 11 shots, including eight on goal. He totals a team-leading 13 points and six goals in six games. Those marks exceed last season’s team-leading scorer with nine points and four goals in 18 games. Krause, a 6-0 junior midfielder/forward from Holliston, Mass., is a transfer from Boston College.
All-Tournament Honors Vanderbilt PUMA Classic (Sept. 17 & 19): John Krause, Joe Germanese and Eric Steen were named to the Vanderbilt PUMA Classic All-Tournament team. Vanderbilt was undefeated in the Classic with a 3-3 tie vs. Northwestern and a 1-0 double overtime win vs. Memphis. Davidson adidas Classic (Sept. 10 & 12): John Krause and Kenny Schoeni were named to the Davidson adidas Classic All-Tournament team. The Commodores were 36 seconds away from defeating #7 UNC-Greensboro before the Spartans tied the game and eventually won in overtime.
Commodore Newcomers Make Noise Freshman Jerry Yirenki scored two goals in the UNC-Greensboro contest for his first career goals. In the UNC-Greensboro contest, all of VU’ goals were accounted for by Commodore newcomers. Yirenkyi scored two, while fellow classmate Joe Germanese scored one goal and transfer John Krause scored the final goal. UNC-Greensboro is currently ranked #1 in the nation.
MVC Preseason Honors The Commodores are picked to finish eighth in the MVC Preseason Poll selected by league coaches. Sophomore Justin Moreland was selected to the Honorable Mention Team. The complete poll and teams are on page four.

Germanese Tagged as Top Freshman Freshman Joe Germanese has been tagged as one of the top freshman in the nation. The College Soccer News (www.collegesoccernews.com) has named him to its list of the Top 100 Freshman To Keep an Eye On. Germanese, a 5-11 forward from Ballwin, Mo., scored the first goal in the Commodore’s 2-1 win over Carson Newman in exhibition action.
Five-Goal Game; Five Different Scorers The Commodores scored five goals in the 5-0 victory over Drury. It was the first time VU scored five goals since Sept. 26 , 2003, when the Commodores defeated Belmont, 5-3. Five different Commodores scored in the Drury win, including newcomers John Krause, and Joe Germanese. Brent Richard, Jamie Gilbert and Casey Steen also scored in the match. Krause, Germanese and Richard also had an assist in the contest for three points each.
Goalkeeper Shutouts Goalkeepers Kenny Schoeni and Adam Guzzo combined for the 5-0 shutout of Drury. Jamie Burns, who started in the season opener, was sidelined after suffering a hip pointer in the Belmont game. Schoeni collected his first complete game shutout with a 1-0 victory over Memphis in double overtime. Schoeni totaled three saves in 101:22 minutes. He recorded his second shutout in a 1-0 victory over Southwest Missouri where he registered four saves.
RedShirt Commodores Senior Ryan Paugh and Jason Le will be medical redshirts this season.
