Women’s soccer upends Bulldogs in Starkville, 4-1

The Dores return from Starkville, Miss., victorious as they defeated Mississippi State, 4-1. Goal scorers for the Commodores included Brette Healy, Lea Lafield, Lauren Mitchell and Amy Baumann.

Following tonight’s win, Vanderbilt has a record of 5-6-4 overall and 4-2-3 in SEC play. The first goal of the game came from Lauren Mitchell just three minutes into the game when she received the ball in the box from Kelci Hegg.

Vanderbilt’s other three goals came in the second half. Less than ten minutes into the second, assist-leader Lea Lafield scored a goal after she received from Hegg, giving Hegg her second assist on the night. The third goal came just 20 minutes into the second half from freshman Amy Baumann on a service from fellow freshman Sarah Dennis. Vanderbilt’s fourth and final goal came Brette Healy when she received the ball from Amy Baumann off a defensive miscue.

Freshman Amy Baumann had an excellent night for the Dores registering three points in one game. It was truly the freshman night to shine as they combined to earn six points on the night.

Mississippi State’s goal was scored by Kevyn Shelledy on a service from the outside. The Bulldogs fall to 5-8-3 overall and 3-5-1 in the SEC.

Vanderbilt returns home for their last game in Nashville on Sunday at 2:30 p.m. They will face the Rebels from Ole Miss. Ole Miss is currently 8-7-1 overall and 4-4-1 in the SEC. The Dores will also celebrate senior day in honoring seniors Jessica Fear and Molly Wilson.
