The Commodores women’s soccer team produced one big Vanderbilt win in Athens this weekend beating the Bulldogs 4-2 on a Sunday afternoon.

Vanderbilt goals were scored by Alexis Yoculan (1), Susan McAleavey (1) and Meghan Habig (2). Freshman Yoculan registered her first goal of her college career in her home town of Athens. “It was great to see Alexis get her first goal in front of her Athens fans,” said Head Coach Ronnie Coveleskie Hill. Yoculan’s goal was assisted by freshman Sarah Dennis.

Susan McAleavey’s goal was scored off a corner kick from Lauren Mitchell. “Susan came off the bench to play an excellent game for us today,” said Hill. “I can’t say enough about the quality of goals scored by our team.”

Junior midfielder Meghan Habig registered two goals for the Commodores. Her first goal was scored off an assist by Lea Lafield and the second assisted by Ashley Duffy. Lafield has put up excellent numbers for the Dores this season with seven assists so far. Habig has also showed great effort in scoring the team high six goals.

“Our team scored early but then struggled to get our rhythm through most of the remainder of the first half,” said Hill. “We came out refreshed and like a new team the second half. We played best when we were able to take care of the ball. Georgia plays a very aggressive type game and we were able to rise to that challenge. I am real proud of our girls today. We have a real battle in front of us with three SEC games in the schedule. They showed first class service today and first class goals. I am very proud of their effort.”

The Dores will play on the road again on Friday against Mississippi State at 7:00 p.m. and then will return to Nashville for a Sunday game against Ole Miss at 2:30 p.m.
