Women’s Soccer on the Road in the SEC

10/14/2004

The Commodore women’s soccer team hits the road for tough SEC games against Georgia and Tennessee. The Dores are 3-5-4 overall but 2-1-3 in SEC play. They have played four overtime games in a row.

“It has been fantastic playing at home for the past four games,” said Head Coach Ronnie Coveleskie Hill. “Our home stadium, and our energetic home crowd provided such an inspiration for our team.  Now, our next challenge will be to adjust to team travel again.  And we must find the same energy within ourselves and our team.”

Vanderbilt will first travel to Knoxville to face the #12 Tennessee Lady Vols. Historically, the Commodores have had good success versus Tennessee going 6-2-1 all time and 3-1 in Knoxville.

“Tennessee is in the middle of the most successful season in school history,” said Hill. “As a team, they possess a very aggressive attack as well as a balanced defense.  We must be competitive and organized defensively as well as willing to take risks in our attack.”

Tennessee is led by top scorer Kayla Lockaby who comes into the game with seven goals on the season. The Lady Vols have had significant wins against top opponents including #15 Duke and #8 Florida.

After taking on Tennessee, the Dores will head to Athens to face the Georgia Bulldogs. The Bulldogs are 3-6-4 overall, 1-3-2 in SEC play.

“Georgia has and will always be a very good team,” said Hill. “Their emotions are riding very high after coming off of a big win over LSU last weekend. So, we will have to be very composed throughout the match. It is important that we maintain our focus for the last five conference games. If we are successful at managing our emotions and executing our game plan, good results will follow. I am still positive that our best games are ahead of us.”

The Bulldogs are led by SEC Defensive player of the week (10/11) Ashley Lindley. Senior goalkeeper Lindley has started in all of Georgia’s 12 games and has registered 63 saves. Georgia’s top scorer is currently Karen Zmirak who has five goals.

“We have a great weekend of soccer ahead of us, said Hill. “Every time we play both Tennessee and Georgia, it is a competitive one-goal game.”

The Dores will kickoff against Tennessee on Firiday night at 7:00 p.m. and against Georgia on Sunday at 2:00 p.m.
