#7 SMU Defeats Vanderbilt, 2-1

Dallas, Texas – The #7 SMU Mustangs scored two second half goals to defeat the Vanderbilt Commodores, 2-1, tonight in Missouri Valley Conference action. Vanderbilt is now 6-4-1, 2-1 in the MVC, while SMU improves to 8-3, 3-0 in league play.

Box Score After a scoreless first half, SMU’s Ryan Latham scored his first goal of the season at the 55:31 mark. Latham took a shot that rebounded off VU goalkeeper Kenny Schoeni and scored on the unassisted goal. Alex Smith then hit a 25-yard free kick into the goal untouched at the 86:39 mark for a 2-0 SMU lead. Vanderbilt’s Jamie Gilbert scored with 14 seconds left in the contest to ruin the Mustang shutout. SMU outshot Vanderbilt 19-9. Freshman Joe Germanese totaled two shots with one on goal. Schoeni numbered six saves in the contest, while SMU goalie T.J. Tomasso totaled three saves – all in the first half. Vanderbilt takes on Tulsa Sunday (Oct. 10) at 1:35 pm in Oklahoma.
