Women’s soccer defeats Alabama in overtime 10-3-04 Vanderbilt’s women’s soccer team held their second SEC game of the season at home and defeated Alabama 1-0 in overtime. The game was a very fast-paced and evenly matched set. — Box Score — Towards the end of the second half, Vanderbilt had many opportunities to score but just couldn’t connect. The game-winning goal was registered by junior midfielder Lauren Mitchell who received the ball in the middle from Lea Lafield. The goal came about five minutes into the overtime period. Alabama registered 11 shots and 3 saves for goalkeeper Laura Lowman. Vanderbilt turned in 12 shots and 5 saves for goalkeeper Tyler Griffin. Griffin turned in yet another excellent game for the Commodores. “We didn’t play a great game today over Alabama,” said Head Coach Ronnie Coveleskie-Hill. “Alabama pressured us a lot and we had many mistakes. The good news is that we were able to regroup in overtime which showed overall a huge improvement to our program. Alabama played a great game and put us under constant pressure.” On Lauren Mitchell: “Lauren played well for us,” said Hill. “In the second half we put her back in the center midfield spot. She was what was missing in the midfield and came up big in the end.” Vanderbilt now has a record of 2-0-2 in overtime play including a win against LSU and today’s win against Alabama. The Commodores will stay home next weekend with two SEC battles at the Vanderbilt Soccer Complex. They will face South Carolina on Friday, October 8 at 7:00 p.m. and Florida on Sunday, October 10 at 2:30pm. Check vucommodores.com for game previews of all of next weekend’s matchups. |
