Vanderbilt Defeats Evansville, 2-1, in Missouri Valley Conference Opener Nashville, Tenn. — Vanderbilt’s John Krause scored his fourth game-winning goal of the season with 12 minutes remaining in the game to lead the Commodores to a 2-1 victory over Evansville in the Missouri Valley Conference season opener. — Box Score — The Commodores, who have won four consecutive games, improve to 5-3-1, 1-0 in the MVC, while Evansville owns a 2-7-2 mark, 0-1 in league action. Krause, who leads the MVC with 20 points, scored both of Vanderbilt’s goals to increase his season total to nine. The Commodores struck just over five minutes into the game when Krause hit an 18-yard shot off a pass from Joe Germanese and Patrick Ryan. Germanese had a one-on-one opportunity five minutes later, but his shot landed just right of the net. He had another scoring opportunity from 25-yards out at the 27:50 mark, but Evansville goalkeeper Corey Southers made a saving catch 12-yards in front of the goal – his only save in the contest. Evansville tied the game at the 39:33 mark when Jay Fankam scored on a header from eight-yards out in a crowd on a cross from Cory Elenio. “We played good soccer in the first 20 minutes,” Vanderbilt Head Coach Tim McClements said. “But, to Evansville’s credit, they stepped up and caused us a lot of problems and we gave up a goal to even things up.” Vanderbilt outshot Evansville 7-3 in the first half, but the Purple Aces dominated the offensive side of the field in the second half, outshooting the Commodores 10-1. “Evansville came out in the second half and dominated play, so we had to battle our way back into the game which we did.” The Purple Aces totaled 10 shots in the second half, including five on goal. Dan Broxup missed from 6-yards out off a corner, while Robbie Roate’s shot from 25-yards out was scooped up by VU goalkeeper Kenny Schoeni. Schoeni followed with another save off a Dan Bigham shot before Krause scored at the 77:54 mark to give the Commodores the lead. Schoeni numbered six saves in the contest, including five in the second half. But, the save of the game was by defender Kyle Lapkewych who stood in goal after Schoeni was pulled to the front of the goal and kicked a Kyle Reed shot out of the net with 30 seconds remaining to preserve the Commodore win. “It was by no means a pretty game, but we battled and found a way to win,” McClements added. Krause’s game winner was the only Vanderbilt shot in the second half. He took a short pass from Germanese and went right to left from 8-yards out for the goal. The Commodores return to MVC action Sunday when they host Southwest Missouri at noon at the Vanderbilt Soccer Complex. |
