Even though the Tigers from Auburn are ranked #20 in the nation, the Commodores were not intimidated. “We can play better but I still am okay with the result of the game being a tie,” said Head Coach Ronnie Coveleskie Hill. “We were heartbroken with the goal by Auburn. Our team weathered difficult shots from Auburn and played well. I am very proud of this team and especially the defensive stance they took.”

Goalkeeper Tyler Griffin put up an amazing effort, saving seven goal attempts including a few dives and one that had her stretched out vertically to reach the ball. “Tyler has a fantastic game. She was solid on balls served in the box,” said Hill. “Tyler is showing her experience and is gaining confidence.” Also putting forth a stellar efforts were junior Meghan Habig who scored Vanderbilt’s only goal , senior Molly Wilson, freshman Amy Baumann and senior Jessica Fear. “This is Meghan’s third game where she has had a goal,” said Hill. “She is the hardest working players as well as one of the most intense. If the ball is in front of the goal, I want Meghan on it. She took a 50/50 chance on a mistake by Auburn and it resulted in a goal for us.”

The game was pushed to overtime when Auburn scored with less than five minutes left in the second half. Throughout the overtime period, both teams very aggressive soccer. Junior Lauren Mitchell and junior Kelci Hegg truly stepped their game in both ten minute overtime periods.

The Commodores play again this weekend at home. Game time is 2:30 p.m. at the Vanderbilt Soccer Complex and will follow the men’s game at noon.
