Women’s Soccer falls just short of SEC win 9/24/2004 Commodores featured on Fox Sports Net The Vanderbilt women’s soccer team traveled to Fayetteville, Arkansas for their SEC season debut. The Commodores finished the game with a 2-1 loss after a late-game goal by the Lady Backs. Box Score Vanderbilt’s only goal came from sophomore midfielder Susan McAleavey off a header from junior Meghan Habig. The header was a direct result from a corner kick started by freshman Amy Baumann. The goal was scored with only 3:24 minutes left in the first half. Coming back into the second half, Head Coach Ronnie Coveleskie Hill was optimistic that the Commodores would come out stronger in the second half. That was the case until a defensive breakdown caused goal number two for the Lady Backs. The second goal came late in the game from Arkansas’ Susan Gwisdala with only 7:30 minutes left. The Commodores continued to fight but came up short as the Lady Backs won the game 2-1. Major contributors in the game for the Commodores included great offensive work from Meghan Habig as well as great defense by Ashley Duffy. Vanderbilt and Arkansas seemed to be very evenly matched throughout the whole game. The Fox Sports Net commentators even mentioned that the Commodores might have had the offensive advantage but the Commodores couldn’t pull out this SEC win. This win also marks Arkansas’ Head Coach Gordon Henderson’s first SEC win. Next up for Vanderbilt women’s soccer is LSU. The Commodores will travel to Baton Rouge, LA to take on the LSU Lady Tigers on Sunday, September 26 at 2:00 p.m. CST. |
