Vanderbilt Plays Host To 2004 PUMA Classic The Vanderbilt men’s soccer team welcomes a trio of teams to the Music City this evening for the first night of the 2004 Vanderbilt PUMA Classic. The Commodores will take on Northwestern tonight at approximately 8 p.m. CT, following the conclusion of a Memphis-Eastern Illinois matchup that is scheduled to kick-off at 6 p.m. Vanderbilt Commodores (1-3) Vanderbilt Quick Facts Vanderbilt and the PUMA Classic The champion of the Vanderbilt University Holiday Inn/PUMA Classic will be determined by best overall tournament record. In the event of a tie, a winner will be determined using the following criteria: 1. Head-to-head record; 2. Goal Differential; 3. Goals Scored; 4. Goals Allowed Last Time Out – Vanderbilt at the Davidson adidas Classic Vanderbilt is now 1-3 on the season. Freshman Joe Germanese put the Commodores on the board just under five minutes into the game when he dribbled through a crowd and scored from 10-yards out. UNC-Greensboro’s James Goodman then scored two unanswered goals before Yirenkyi tied the game at the 37:59 mark on a cross from sophomore Josh Medcalf. Yirenki opened the scoring in the second half on a pass from Germanese to give VU a 3-2 lead. Farrell scored his first goal of the game off a direct kick from the left side to tie the game at 3-3. Junior John Krause gave the Commodores a 4-3 lead when he took a Jamie Gilbert pass and scored on a header over the goalkeeper at the 79:08 mark. Vanderbilt numbered 11 shots, including six on goal. Krause totaled four shots, including two on goal, followed by Germanese, Yirkenki and Kyle Lapkewych with two shots each. The Spartan’s Ryan Nowak totaled two saves and gave up four goals, while Jay Benfield played goal during overtime and did not face any shots. VU’s Kenny Schoeni was in goal for all of regulation giving up the four goals and totaling seven saves. Jamie Burns took over at goal in overtime. The Spartans numbered 20 shots in the contest. Kenny Schoeni and John Krause were named to the Davidson adidas Classic All-Tournament team. Sept. 10 — Vanderbilt 2, Davidson 5 Davidson led 3-1 at halftime. Davidson scored two more goals in the second half with the final Wildcat goal coming at the 85:36 mark when Tom Lavan kicked a rebound in off Kerby Teller’s shot. Just 32 seconds later, Gilbert kicked a shot over the Wilcat’s goalkeeper from 40-yards out to end the scoring for both teams. Davidson outshot Vanderbilt 16-9, led by Sartorio with three shots, including two on goal. Krause led Vanderbilt with four shots, including three on goal. VU’s Kenny Schoeni started in goal and played for 77:29 giving up four goals and totaling three saves. Jamie Burns played the final 12:31 giving up one goal and numbering one save. Davidson’s Bart Creasman totaled four saves and gave up one goal in 63:20, while Jordan Hauser played for 26:40 giving up one goal with no saves. All-Tournament Honors Offensive Commodores Commodore Newcomers Make Noise Four Commodores total more than five points this season (Krause-7, Germanese and Jamie Gilbert-6 and Yirenkyi-5). Last season in 18 games, only three players totaled at least five points led by Jimmy Stone with nine. MVC Preseason Honors Commodore Captains Germanese Tagged as Top Freshman Five-Goal Game; Five Different Scorers Five different Commodores scored in the Drury win, including newcomers John Krause, and Joe Germanese. Brent Richard, Jamie Gilbert and Casey Steen also scored in the match. Krause, Germanese and Richard also had an assist in the contest for three points each.
