Vanderbilt Plays Host To 2004 PUMA Classic

The Vanderbilt men’s soccer team welcomes a trio of teams to the Music City this evening for the first night of the 2004 Vanderbilt PUMA Classic. The Commodores will take on Northwestern tonight at approximately 8 p.m. CT, following the conclusion of a Memphis-Eastern Illinois matchup that is scheduled to kick-off at 6 p.m.

The champion of the Vanderbilt University Holiday Inn/PUMA Classic will be determined by best overall tournament record. In the event of a tie, a winner will be determined using the following criteria: 1. Head-to-head record; 2. Goal Differential; 3. Goals Scored; 4. Goals Allowed

Last Time Out – Vanderbilt at the Davidson adidas Classic
Sept. 12 — Vanderbilt 4, #7 UNC-Greensboro 5
Vanderbilt freshman forward Jerry Yirenki scored two goals, but it wasn’t enough as #7 UNC-Greensboro came from behind to defeat the Commodores 5-4 in overtime in the second game of the Davidson adidas Classic. The Commodores led 4-3 and were 36 seconds away from the upset win when Pat Farrell scored from 18-yards out to tie the score at 4-4. Randi Patterson’s header from the middle of the box gave UNC-Greensboro the win at the 92:56 mark keeping the Spartans undefeated with a 4-0 record.

Vanderbilt is now 1-3 on the season. Freshman Joe Germanese put the Commodores on the board just under five minutes into the game when he dribbled through a crowd and scored from 10-yards out. UNC-Greensboro’s James Goodman then scored two unanswered goals before Yirenkyi tied the game at the 37:59 mark on a cross from sophomore Josh Medcalf. Yirenki opened the scoring in the second half on a pass from Germanese to give VU a 3-2 lead. Farrell scored his first goal of the game off a direct kick from the left side to tie the game at 3-3. Junior John Krause gave the Commodores a 4-3 lead when he took a Jamie Gilbert pass and scored on a header over the goalkeeper at the 79:08 mark.

Vanderbilt numbered 11 shots, including six on goal. Krause totaled four shots, including two on goal, followed by Germanese, Yirkenki and Kyle Lapkewych with two shots each. The Spartan’s Ryan Nowak totaled two saves and gave up four goals, while Jay Benfield played goal during overtime and did not face any shots. VU’s Kenny Schoeni was in goal for all of regulation giving up the four goals and totaling seven saves. Jamie Burns took over at goal in overtime. The Spartans numbered 20 shots in the contest. Kenny Schoeni and John Krause were named to the Davidson adidas Classic All-Tournament team.

Sept. 10 — Vanderbilt 2, Davidson 5
Davidson, NC – Five different players scored a goal leading the Davidson Wildcats to a 5-2 win over Vanderbilt. The Wildcats scored first just over five minutes into the game off a Mac Wilkie direct kick from the corner. Vanderbilt tied the game at the 16:35 mark when junior John Krause scored his second goal of the season – a kick from the middle of the box on an assist by Jamie Gilbert. Two minutes later, Davidson took the lead for good when David Sartorio scored on a penalty kick.

Davidson led 3-1 at halftime. Davidson scored two more goals in the second half with the final Wildcat goal coming at the 85:36 mark when Tom Lavan kicked a rebound in off Kerby Teller’s shot. Just 32 seconds later, Gilbert kicked a shot over the Wilcat’s goalkeeper from 40-yards out to end the scoring for both teams. Davidson outshot Vanderbilt 16-9, led by Sartorio with three shots, including two on goal. Krause led Vanderbilt with four shots, including three on goal. VU’s Kenny Schoeni started in goal and played for 77:29 giving up four goals and totaling three saves. Jamie Burns played the final 12:31 giving up one goal and numbering one save. Davidson’s Bart Creasman totaled four saves and gave up one goal in 63:20, while Jordan Hauser played for 26:40 giving up one goal with no saves.

All-Tournament Honors
John Krause and Kenny Schoeni were named to the Davidson adidas Classic All-Tournament team. The Commodores were 36 seconds away from defeating #7 UNC-Greensboro before the Spartans tied the game and eventually won in overtime.

Offensive Commodores
The Commodores total 33 points in four games this season. Last season, Vanderbilt totaled 42 points in 18 contests. The Commodores have already exceeded their 2003 assists total with 11 this season compared to last year’s 10 assists.

Commodore Newcomers Make Noise
Freshman Jerry Yirenki scored two goals in the UNC-Greensboro contest for his first career goals. In the UNC-Greensboro contest, all of VU’ goals were accounted for by Commodore newcomers. Yirenkyi scored two, while fellow classmate Joe Germanese scored one goal and transfer John Krause scored the final goal.

Four Commodores total more than five points this season (Krause-7, Germanese and Jamie Gilbert-6 and Yirenkyi-5). Last season in 18 games, only three players totaled at least five points led by Jimmy Stone with nine.

MVC Preseason Honors
The Commodores are picked to finish eighth in the MVC Preseason Poll selected by league coaches. Sophomore Justin Moreland was selected to the Honorable Mention Team. The complete poll and teams are on page two.

Germanese Tagged as Top Freshman
Freshman Joe Germanese has been tagged as one of the top freshman in the nation. The College Soccer News (www.collegesoccernews.com) has named him to its list of the Top 100 Freshman To Keep an Eye On. Germanese, a 5-11 forward from Ballwin, Mo., scored the first goal in the Commodore’s 2-1 win over Carson Newman in exhibition action.

Five-Goal Game; Five Different Scorers
The Commodores scored five goals in the 5-0 victory over Drury. It was the first time VU scored five goals since Sept. 26 , 2003, when the Commodores defeated Belmont, 5-3.

Five different Commodores scored in the Drury win, including newcomers John Krause, and Joe Germanese. Brent Richard, Jamie Gilbert and Casey Steen also scored in the match. Krause, Germanese and Richard also had an assist in the contest for three points each.

Schoeni and Guzzo Combine for Shutout
Goalkeepers Kenny Schoeni and Adam Guzzo combined for the 5-0 shutout of Drury. Jamie Burns, who started in the season opener, was sidelined after suffering a hip pointer in the Belmont game.

VU’s starting lineup vs. Drury consisted of four juniors, six sophomores and one freshman.
