Commodores Take #7 UNC-Greensboro to Overtime in 5-4 Loss

Davidson, NC –  Vanderbilt freshman forward Jerry Yirenki scored two goals, but it wasn’t enough as #7 UNC-Greensboro came from behind to defeat the Commodores 5-4 in overtime in the second game of the Davidson adidas Classic.

The Commodores led 4-3 and were 36 seconds away from the upset win when Pat Farrell scored from 18-yards out to tie the score at 4-4.  Randi Patterson’s header from the middle of the box gave UNC-Greensboro the win at the 92:56 mark keeping the Spartans undefeated with a 4-0 record.  Vanderbilt is now 1-3 on the season.
 
Freshman Joe Germanese put the Commodores on the board just under five minutes into the game when he dribbled through a crowd and scored from 10-yards out.  UNC-Greensboro’s James Goodman then scored two unanswered goals before Yirenkyi tied the game at the 37:59 mark on a cross from sophomore Josh Medcalf.
 
Yirenki opened the scoring in the second half on a pass from Germanese to give VU a 3-2 lead.  Farrell scored his first goal of the game off a direct kick from the left side to tie the game at 3-3.  Junior John Krause gave the Commodores a 4-3 lead when he took a Jamie Gilbert pass and scored on a header over the goalkeeper at the 79:08 mark.
 
Vanderbilt numbered 11 shots, including six on goal.  Krause totaled four shots, including two on goal, followed by Germanese, Yirkenki and Kyle Lapkewych with two shots each.  The Spartan’s Ryan Nowak totaled two saves and gave up four goals, while Jay Benfield played goal during overtime and did not face any shots.
 
VU’s Kenny Schoeni was in goal for all of regulation giving up the four goals and totaling seven saves.  Jamie Burns took over at goal in overtime.  The Spartans numbered 20 shots in the contest.

The Commodores host the Vanderbilt University PUMA Classic Friday and Sunday (Sept. 17 & 19) at the Vanderbilt Soccer Complex.
