Vanderbilt Women’s Soccer Faces Tough Loss To Minnesota 9/3/2004 Looks To Rebound Sunday At UAB The Vanderbilt women’s soccer team traveled to the University of Alabama at Birmingham to compete in the UAB Nike Classic. Unfortunately, in the first game, they did not come up victorious. — Box Score — The Commodores lost to the University of Minnesota 1-0. Said Head Coach Ronnie Coveleskie Hill, “This was a very tough loss for our team but we learned a few valuable lessons.” The only goal was scored 31 minutes into the game by Minnesota midfielder, Kaitlin Neary. “The goal that was made was a result of a defensive breakdown,” said Coach Hill. “We must come to games ready to play the entire 90 minutes. This game didn’t look like Vanderbilt soccer until there was about 20 minutes left in the game. If you look at this team at the beginning of the game and then at the end, they were two totally different teams. The Minnesota keeper played excellent, showed perserverance with every attempt made. We had very ambitious shot selection, just not opportunistic. This was definitely our first real test as a team. The next question is to see how we react to such a quick turn around when we face UAB on Sunday. The game is literally in these girls hands,” said Coach Hill. On a positive note, sophomore Monica Buff, who is just coming back from an injury, played the last 25 minutes of tonight’s game. “Monica definitely showed promise in her play tonight. We look forward to having her back on a regular basis,” said Coach Hill. The standout from tonight’s game for the Commodores was junior midfielder Meghan Habig. “Meghan really played solid tonight as the holding midfielder. She definitely competed for every ball that came her way,” said Coach Hill. The Commodores will face the University of Alabama-Birmingham on Sunday, September 5 at 2 p.m. as part of the UAB Nike Classic. This will be the first time this Commodore team plays back to back games. |
