Vanderbilt Announces 2004-05 Women’s Basketball Schedule 9-2-04 9/2/2004 The 2004-05 Vanderbilt women’s basketball schedule includes 11 games against teams that advanced to last year’s NCAA Tournament, three match ups against 2004 NCAA Final Four participants and 14 home dates. Four games on the 27-game slate are to be televised by either FSNSouth or ESPN2. This year’s schedule includes a treat for Commodore basketball fans as both VU’s men’s and women’s teams will participate in doubleheaders slated for Nov. 19 (St. Francis, Pa.), Dec. 1 (Memphis) and Jan. 2 (Troy State). The men’s opponents and gametimes are still to be announced. The Black and Gold will open the 2004-05 regular season at home on Nov. 19 against St. Francis, Pa., looking to add to their 43-game home non-conference winning streak. The defending Northeast Conference Champion Red Flash advanced to the 2004 NCAA Tournament but lost in the opening round to Purdue. A road trip to Savannah State follows before Vanderbilt returns to Memorial Gym to host its annual Vanderbilt Tournament. VU will battle Rhode Island on Nov. 26, then face either Siena or Tennessee-Martin on Nov. 27. The Commodores have just two home games in December and both come against opponents that were on late season’s slate, Memphis (Dec. 1) and Saint Louis (Dec. 12). In between, the Black and Gold will travel to Oxford, Ohio, to face Miami of Ohio (Dec. 4) and to Bowling Green, Ky., to renew their series against the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers (Dec. 9). VU jets out to Malibu, Calif., to participate in the Hilton Woodland Hills Beach Classic over Dec. 20-21. The ‘Dores will face Wright State on the 20th and then either homestanding Pepperdine or the BYU Cougars on the 21st before taking as eight-day holiday break. The Commodores close out 2004 calendar year with a trip to always festive New Orleans, La., to face the UNO Privateers on Dec. 30, before returning to Memorial Gym for the first time in almost a month to open a three-game homestand. The Black and Gold host Troy State on Jan. 2 and then close out the non-conference portion of the schedule by welcoming in Atlantic Coast Conference power N.C State on Jan. 6 in the first meeting between the two schools since the 1995-96 season. The rugged 14-game Southeastern Conference campaign opens on Jan. 9 in Memorial Gym as VU faces the South Carolina Gamecocks. Other highlights to Vanderbilt’s 2004-05 schedule include: Four Commodore games are currently slated to be televised. FSNSouth will broadcast from Memorial Gym on Jan. 16 and Jan. 23 as VU faces two of last season’s NCAA Final Four participants Tennessee and LSU, respectively. VU’s contest against the Lady Vols in Knoxville (Feb. 13) will be broadcast nationally on ESPN2, while FSNSouth will televise VU’s road date at Georgia on Feb. 27. Vanderbilt’s first SEC road trip of the season takes the Commodores to Auburn to face the Tigers on Jan. 13. The Commodores bested AU three times during the 2003-04 campaign including a 76-74 thriller in the SEC Tournament quarterfinals. Home matchups include contests against four of last year’s NCAA Tournament squads: Tennessee (Jan. 16), LSU (Jan. 23), Florida (Jan. 30) and Auburn (Feb. 10). South Carolina (Jan. 9), Arkansas (Feb. 17) and Alabama (Feb. 24) round out the Memorial Gym conference slate. The Commodores have seven road dates in SEC play including trips to Auburn (Jan. 13), Mississippi (Jan. 20), Kentucky (Jan. 27), Mississippi State (Feb. 3), Tennessee (Feb. 13), Florida (Feb. 20) and Georgia (Feb. 27). |
