The Vanderbilt Commodore men’s soccer team opens the 2004 regular season tonight at Belmont. Gametime is 7:30 p.m. CT at Whitten Soccer Complex on the Belmont campus.

Commodores Defeat Carson-Newman in Exhibition Contest, 2-1 (Aug. 21)
Two Vanderbilt freshmen scored goals to lead the Commodores to a 2-1 victory over Carson Newman in a scrimmage at Drakes Creek Park in Hendersonville.

Joe Germanese (5-10, Fr., F) scored the first goal of the game in the first half for the Commodores before Carson Newman tied the game prior to halftime, 1-1. Jerry Yirenkyi (5-7, 160, Fr., F) scored the game winner with just under 10 minutes remaining in the game to give Vanderbilt the win.

“It’s nice to see the freshmen make an immediate impact,” VU Head Coach Tim McClements said. “It was a great effort from top to bottom, but we still have some things to work on.”

MVC Preseason Honors
The Commodores are picked to finish eighth in the MVC Preseason Poll selected by league coaches. Sophomore Justin Moreland was selected to the Honorable Mention Team. The complete poll and teams are on page two.
