8/27/2004

Nashville, TN — The Vanderbilt women’s soccer team faced off in their first regular season game versus the soccer powerhouse from Wake Forest. The Commodores put up a excellent fight against the highly competitive Demon Deacons from Wake Forest. Both teams had many great chances at goals but excellent goalkeeping prevented the game from going to either team. Wake Forest’s goalie Ruth Ann Supica registered six saves on 14 shots while Vanderbilt’s Nicole Reed had seven saves on 15 shots.

Head coach Ronnie Coveleskie Hill had this to say about what she learned about her team at tonight’s game, “I knew coming into the game that this team had the passion and excitement to be great but what I saw in them is a new level of competition that was both ambitious and passionate. They were truly inspiring tonight.”

Coveleski Hill also said that the crowd had a marginal influence on how the game was played. There were well over 400 people in the crowds with the majority being Vanderbilt students.

“This team has a totally different feel than last year’s team. We are prepared to go into games attacking more and I have placed players in the specific positions ready for that attack,” Coveleskie Hill said.

Freshman Sarah Dennis was one of those players and also the only goal scorer from Vanderbilt.

“The freshmen that are on this team were heavily recruited players who are going to enjoy a long and successful careers in soccer. They made quality adult decisions on the field and that is truly exciting to this team,” Coveleskie Hill added.

The Commodores will face the University of Minnesota on Friday, September 3. This game will take place as part of a tournament at the University of Alabama-Birmingham. The Commodores will not return home until September 19 when they face Drury.
