List Advances to Friday’s U.S. Amateur Quarterfinals Vanderbilt sophomore Luke List’s impressive run continues at the 104th U.S. Amateur following Thursday’s 2 and 1, third-round victory over University of Kentucky senior John Holmes. The Ringgold, Ga., native List moves on to Friday afternoon’s quarterfinals to face Danny Green of Jackson, Tenn., at 1:00 p.m. Green, the oldest remaining competitor in the field at 47, a 1989 U.S. Amateur runner-up and a veteran of nearly 40 U.S. Golf Association championships, upset Spencer Levin 2-up. List, a 2004 First Team All-SEC and Third Team Ping All-America selection, opened an up-and-down third-round match with a birdie at #1 to quickly grab a 1-up lead. The advantage grew to 2-up for List two holes later when Holmes registered a bogey at the par-3 third. However, the UK senior rallied to square the match with a birdie at #4 and a par at #6, while List suffered a five on the par-4 sixth. It would be the last time the match was all-square until the back nine as a List birdie at the par-3 seventh hole and two consecutive bogeys by Holmes on #8 and #9 handed the Vanderbilt sophomore a 3-up advantage at the turn. Just when it seemed that Holmes was about to fall out of the match he mounted another rally with some help from List. Holmes registered pars at #10 and #11 and an eagle at the par-5 12th to square the match, as List carded double bogey, bogey and birdie, respectively. The pair remained deadlocked until List birdied the 15th and watched as Holmes bogeyed #17 to hand him the match 2 and 1. List is the first Vanderbilt men’s golfer ever to be chosen to the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) All-Freshman squad. He also became just the second VU golfer (Brandt Snedeker 2002, 2003 All-American) in program history to achieve All-America status after a 2003-04 campaign in which he posted nine top-10 finishes in 13 events, led the Black and Gold in scoring average at 72.03 and helped the Commodores advance to the NCAA Division I Championships in Hot Springs, Va. List established two new school records during his initial campaign at Vanderbilt. He carded a 9-under par 63 at the 2004 Hyatt/Dorado Beach Intercollegiate to establish new school marks for most shots under par in a single round (nine) and lowest single round score (63). Match play at the U.S. Amateur is being contested on the 7,266-yard, par-70 layout of the Winged Foot Golf Club’s West Course. Designed by A. W. Tillinghast and opened in 1923, Winged Foot has hosted nine USGA championships, including the U.S. Open in 1929, 1959, 1974 and 1984, the U.S. Women’s Open in 1957 and 1972, the U.S. Senior Open in 1980, the U.S. Amateur in 1940 and the Walker Cup Match in 1949.
