Officials Expect More Sales As Season Approaches

Nashville, Tenn. — With 19 days remaining until the Commodores open their football season against South Carolina, the Vanderbilt athletic program has sold more season tickets than during the entire 2003 campaign.

Eric Nichols, marketing and promotions director for Vanderbilt athletics, is encouraged by the sales. The Vanderbilt Ticket Office should surpass the 8,000-mark in season ticket sales on Monday. Slightly more than 7,700 season tickets were sold last year.

“The early response has been very good,” Nichols said. “The numbers are not where we want them, but we are off to a very positive start. More than anything, the response by renewals and prospective buyers has been extremely positive.”

Nichols contributed the sales increase to several factors. A home schedule that includes a season closer against Tennessee typically spikes season ticket sales. Additionally, a number of veteran Commodore players have started for two years and have gained local and national attention, resulting in greater fan awareness. A new partnership with popular Nashville sports talk station WGFX FM-104.5 and a recent “Commodores in the Community” outreach effort featuring Head Coach Bobby Johnson also has helped to create more interest in the team. And finally, the price of season tickets remains affordable, starting as low as $99.

“I think each of these factors are partially responsible for the increase, but I also think sales for football season tickets have been aided by the success other Vanderbilt teams have experienced recently,” Nichols said.

The marketing department hopes to surpass 10,000 season tickets this season. “The numbers already are better than last year, but I can see them going much higher. We’re still almost three weeks away from our home opener and seven weeks away from our second home game (Mississippi State on Oct. 2). Plus, the bulk of our advertising and marketing plan are still in front of us, so I expect rather brisk sales to continue,” Nichols said.

In addition to South Carolina and Tennessee, the Commodores’ home schedule includes games against Mississippi State, Florida, Rutgers and Eastern Kentucky.

Season tickets range from $99 to $140. A special Family Plan featuring two adult tickets and two youth tickets also is available for $215.
