NASHVILLE, Tenn. — After finishing the 2004 season by advancing to the quarterfinal round of the NCAA Tournament, the Vanderbilt men’s tennis team received a post-season national ranking of No. 16 from the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. Individually, senior Chad Harris earned All-America honors from the ITA after completing his collegiate eligibility this spring with a trip to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Singles Championships.

The Commodores posted a trio of impressive wins in May to advance to the final eight of the NCAA Tournament. After defeating Oregon in Oxford, Miss., Vanderbilt took out the Southeastern Conference Regular Season Champion Ole Miss Rebels on their home court. At the national tournament in Tulsa, Okla., the Commodores defeated SEC Tournament Champion Georgia before falling to defending national champion Illinois in the quarterfinals.

In the singles draw, Harris also won three matches to advance to the quarterfinals and earn his second All-America recognition in as many years. Harris joins former Commodore Bobby Reynolds as VU’s only two-time All-Americans. Harris finished his collegiate tennis career with 101 total singles wins — the most in Vanderbilt history. He began the 2004 spring campaign by sharing the Singles Championship at the SEC Coaches Indoor Classic and posted 10 wins over players ranked in the ITA’s top 50 during the season.

Three other Commodores also earned national rankings in the ITA’s final singles poll. Junior Scott Brown (72), senior Zach Dailey (103) and junior Matt Lockin (109) gave Vanderbilt a total of four honorees. In doubles, Harris and Brown finished the season ranked No. 16 in the nation. Regionally, they were the No. 6 doubles team in the Southeast.

Vanderbilt earned a regional team ranking of No. 6, while Harris was ranked No. 8 in singles. Brown (17), Dailey (22) and Lockin (24) also were ranked in the Southeast Region, making Vanderbilt the only team with four players represented in the top 30.
