Vanderbilt Men’s Golf Squad Completes NCAA Championships in 28th

HOT SPRINGS, Va.–After a third round 14-over par 294 on the world-renowned par-70, 6,679-yard Cascades Golf Course at the Homestead in Hot Springs, Va., the Vanderbilt Commodores completed the NCAA Division I Men’s Golf Championships in 28th position with a three-day total of 891. By virtue of their finish, the Black and Gold will not make the cut as one of the top 15 teams that will advance to the final round of play on Friday.<?xml:namespace prefix=”o” ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office”?>

UCLA fired a tournament-low round of 5-under par 275 on Thursday to nab the top spot heading into tomorrow with a three-day total of 7-over par 847. The #5-ranked Bruins lead the #17 Kentucky Wildcats by five strokes, while the leader from the opening two days, the #20 California Golden Bears, trail UCLA by only eight shots. Individually, UNLV’s Ryan Moore carded the low round of the tourney with a 6-under par 64 to nab the lead with a three-day total of 9-under par 201. <?xml:namespace prefix=”st1″ ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags”?>Moore leads Arizona’s Chris Nallen (-7) by two strokes heading into Friday’s final round of action.

For Vanderbilt, junior Ben McClung (Ponte Vedra, Fla.) led the ‘Dores with a solid 2-over par 72 (tied for 69th) after a round of three bogeys and a birdie at the par-5 fifth hole, while fellow junior Lance Goodson (Birmingham, Ala.) carded a 3-over par 73.

Junior Mark Donnell (Mobile, Ala.) fired a 74 and freshman Luke List (Ringgold, Ga.) closed out Vanderbilt’s scoring group with a 75. Sophomore Will Armstrong (Austin, Texas) tallied a 77.

The NCAA Division I Men’s Golf Championships complete the season for head coach Press McPhaul’s Vanderbilt Commodores.

Vanderbilt Men’s Golf Squad 28th After Second Day of NCAA Championships

HOT SPRINGS, Va.–The Vanderbilt Commodores carded a 22-over par 302 during second round action at the NCAA Division I Golf Championships to fall into 28th position at 596. The NCAA event is being conducted on the world-renowned par-70, 6,679-yard Cascades Golf Course at the Homestead in Hot Springs, Va.

For the second consecutive day, the California Golden Bears lead the team competition after posting a two-day total of 8-over par 568 to lead Kentucky by a single stroke. On the individual leaderboard, there’s a three-way tie at the top as Tuesday’s leader, Jeff Hood of Cal, remains in first, deadlocked with Arizona’s Chris Nallen and Kentucky’s Matt Wells at -4.

The 30-team NCAA Championship field includes top-ranked Florida, No. 2 Clemson, No. 3 Georgia, No. 4 Arizona State, No. 5 UCLA, No. 6 Georgia Tech, No. 7 Oklahoma State, No. 8 Arizona, No. 9 Texas, No. 10 TCU, No. 11 Southern California, No. 13 Oklahoma, No. 15 New Mexico, No. 17 Kentucky, No. 20 California, No. 22 BYU, No. 23 Washington, Auburn, Texas A&M, Purdue, North Carolina, SMU, Vanderbilt, Pepperdine, Rhode Island, Penn State, Georgia State, Toledo, Kent State and Wichita State.

Freshman Luke List (Ringgold, Ga.) led the Commodores on Wednesday with a round of 4-over par 74, while junior Lance Goodson, a native of Birmingham, Ala., who fired a 72 during opening round play, carded a second round, 5-over par 75.

Juniors Mark Donnell (Mobile, Ala.) and Ben McClung (Ponte Vedra, Fla.) shot identical rounds of 77, while sophomore Will Armstrong (Austin, Texas) tallied an 83.

Vanderbilt Men’s Golf Tied for 22nd After First Round of NCAA Championships

HOT SPRINGS, Va.–The Vanderbilt Commodores opened play on Tuesday at the 2004 NCAA Division I Men’s Golf Championships with a 14-over par 294 to tie for 22nd position following the opening round of play.

The Black and Gold squad currently stands just eight strokes out of the tournament’s top 10 and are deadlocked with North Carolina, Toledo, Kent State and Arizona State at +14.

The NCAA event is being contested on the world-renowned par-70, 6,679-yard Cascades Golf Course at the Homestead in Hot Springs, Va. California is currently at the top of both the team and individual leaderboards as the Golden Bears fired the day’s lone under-par team round with a 1-under 279. Cal’s Jeff Hood carded a 5-under par 65 to lead the individual standings, one shot ahead of Georgia’s Kevin Kisner and TCU’s Adam Meyer.

Lance Goodson (Birmingham, Ala.) led the Commodore contingent with a round of 2-over par 72 after registering two birdies and four bogeys during his tour of the Cascades layout. Starting his day on hole #10, the junior toured the front nine in even par 35 after a bogey at #15 and a birdie at #17. Following a bogey at #2 on his back nine, Goodson posted a three on the par-4 third hole to improve his scorecard to even par. However, consecutive bogeys at #5 and #6 dropped him to +2 for the day. The round of 72 is a new personal best for Goodson at the NCAA Championship event after firing rounds of 79-84-73 last season.

Luke List, a Ringgold, Ga., native seeing his initial action at the NCAA Championship, began his tournament with a 3-over par 73. The freshman carded birdies at #5 and #17, but was undone by bogeys at #4, #8, #9, #14 and #18.

Junior Mark Donnell (Mobile, Ala.) carded a 4-over par 74, while sophomore Will Armstrong completed Vanderbilt’s scoring contingent with a solid round of 75. Ben McClung, a junior from Ponte Vedra, Fla., shot a 77 during Tuesday’s round.

The Black and Gold will open round two of the NCAA Division I Men’s Golf Championships on Wednesday as part of five separate groups that will tee off from 12:03 p.m.-12:39 p.m. CT.
