ATHENS, Ga. — Vanderbilt junior Audra Falk and the senior Commodore doubles tandem of Kelly Schmandt and Aleke Tsoubanos posted Tuesday victories to advance to the Round of 16 in the NCAA Women’s Individual Championships at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex.
Falk defeated Theresa Logar of Stanford, 4-6, 7-5, 7-6 (5), to advance to the third day of singles competition in Athens. The junior from Cincinnati, Ohio, is undefeated in Athens this post-season, having also posted a pair of victories in dual match appearances against Tennessee and Georgia. Falk, ranked No. 13 in the nation by the ITA, will face the tournament’s fifth seed, Alexis Gordon of Florida, in the Round of 16. Gordon defeated Robin Stephenson on Alabama, 6-3, 7-5, on Tuesday. The match is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. CT. In the doubles tournament, the seventh-seeded pairing of Schmandt and Tsoubanos defeated Ruckert and Strohm of Texas to advance to the second round. On Wednesday, they will face familiar opponents — Manon Kruse and Carien Venter of Middle Tennessee State. The time for that match has not been announced. Schmandt and Tsoubanos are the second-highest seed remaining in the tournament after Round One. Seeds No. 1 (Barnikow/Burdette of Stanford), No. 2 (Jacobs/Kops-Jones of Cal), No. 3 (Johnson/Zawacki of Duke), No. 4 (Hollands/Mlakar of Arizona) and No. 6 (Magnani/Vermeulen of Southern Cal) all were eliminated Tuesday. Earlier in the day in singles action, Schmandt fell to seventh-ranked Amanda Johnson of Duke, 6-3, 6-2. She finished her singles career at Vanderbilt with 108 total victories.
