Final round 290 helps ‘Dores climb from 15th to ninth on tournament’s final day

NEW HAVEN, Conn. — It’s official! Mark down a trip to Hot Springs, Va., and the NCAA Championships for the Vanderbilt Men’s Golf squad as the Black and Gold climbed from 15th to ninth position on the final day of the NCAA East Regional to qualify for the NCAA’s over June 1-4.

The Commodores posted a 10-over par 290 during final round action on the par-70, 6,749-yard Yale Golf Course to finish two strokes ahead of 10th-place teams North Carolina and North Carolina State (10th-place tie to be broken later today in a playoff). Vanderbilt has now reached the NCAA Championships two consecutive years after posting ninth-place finishes at both the 2003 and 2004 NCAA East Regional tournaments.

Clemson nabbed the team title with a final round of 3-under par 277. The Tigers’ 16-over par, three-day total of 856 allowed them to finish play six strokes ahead of runner-up Penn State. Wake Forest’s Bill Haas took individual honors at -3, a single shot ahead of Rhode Island’s Kenneth Fahey.

Freshman Luke List posted another solid round for the Commodores on the final day with an even par 70 to complete the tournament unofficially in a tie for ninth-place at 2-over par 212. After 14 consecutive pars to complete his round on Friday, List began today with eight pars in his first nine holes. A bogey on two was the only blemish on a 1-over par 35 front nine. A five on the par-4 10th dropped List to 2-over par, but birdies at #11, #15 and #16 gave Vanderbilt back three crucial strokes in the team race.

Ben McClung followed up two rounds of 78-76 with an important 2-over par 72 to finish tied for 79th. The junior went out on the front nine in 1-under par 33, before coming in at 3-over on the back side to complete his round of 72.

Juniors Lance Goodson and Mark Donnell completed Vanderbilt’s scoring contingent by firing solid final rounds of 75 and 73, respectively, while sophomore Will Armstrong carded an 11-over par 81.

Vanderbilt will now travel to Hot Springs, Va., for the NCAA Championships over June 1-4. Both visits to the NCAA’s (2003, 2004) for the Black and Gold have occurred during the four-year tenure of head coach Press McPhaul.
