Vanderbilt Defeats Oregon 4-0; To Face Ole Miss In NCAA Second Round OXFORD, Miss. — The Vanderbilt men’s tennis team defeated Oregon 4-0 Saturday afternoon to advance to the NCAA second round. The Commodores (15-11) will face Ole Miss in the final with the winner advancing to the NCAA “Sweet Sixteen.” Oregon ends the season at 9-11. Vanderbilt, the 2003 NCAA runner-up, improved to 9-4 all-time in NCAA postseason play, and has never lost in the first round. The Commodores also improved to 6-0 the last two years in the Magnolia State. The Commodores gained the early 1-0 lead by winning at No. 3 and 1 doubles. Oregon won 8-4 at No. 2 doubles and built a 5-2 advantage on court three, but the Commodore team of Matt Lockin and Nathan Sachs rallied to win six of the final seven games against the Duck’s Thomas Bieri and Chris King to win 8-6. Vanderbilt then won 8-5 at No. 1 doubles to clinch the point. Vanderbilt claimed easy wins at Nos. 6 and 4 singles respectively to increase their lead to 3-0. Oregon won the first sets on courts one and two and was close to winning the No. 2 match, when VU’s Lockin finished off Bieri 7-5, 6-3 on court three to clinch the victory. Vanderbilt led 6-4, 4-3 at No. 5 singles. Ole Miss defeated Vanderbilt 5-2 in the regular season meeting in Nashville. This will be their first meeting in NCAA competition. The last time the two teams faced each other in Oxford, Vanderbilt claimed a 4-1 win in the semifinals of the 2003 SEC Tournament. DOUBLES |
