5/8/2004

SOUTH BEND, Ind. — Despite five goals from senior midfielder Jess Roguski, the 11th-ranked Vanderbilt women’s lacrosse team ended the 2004 regular season with an 11-8 loss to 13th-ranked Notre Dame at Moose Krause Stadium Saturday.

The NCAA Tournament bracket will be announced on Sunday, May 9, at 5:30 p.m. CT on College Sports TV (CSTV). The Commodores (10-5, 5-1 American Lacrosse Conference) won the ALC’s automatic qualification with a 10-9 victory over sixth-ranked Northwestern Thursday.

Notre Dame (12-4 overall) had lost four consecutive games before defeating Syracuse and Vanderbilt to remain on the inside of the NCAA Tournament bubble.

Saturday in South Bend, temperatures reached near 90 degrees for the match’s 1 p.m. start. Fresh off a gut-wrenching league championship victory, the Commodores got out of the gates slowly. Notre Dame would notch the game’s first three goals to take an early lead.

Roguski put Vanderbilt on the board in the 10th minute, scoring on a free position attempt following a draw control from senior Kelly Devlin which also was VU’s first of the afternoon. Devlin then assisted sophomore Kate Hickman’s first tally of the contest to bring the Commodores within a goal, 3-2.

The Fighting Irish scored a pair of goals to extend their lead to 5-2. In the 26th minute, Hickman assisted Roguski’s second goal of the day, but Notre Dame answered with less than a minute to go in the half and took a 6-3 lead into the break.

Vanderbilt struck first in the second half, as senior Tewaaraton Trophy nominee Michelle Allen found the back of the net in the 37th minute. Notre Dame again answered to keep the Commodores at bay.

Roguski would score Vanderbilt’s next three goals, only to be answered score-for-score by the Irish attack. The Commodores trailed 10-7 with eight minutes remaining in the game. Their final tally of the day came from Hickman, who notched her fourth-straight multi-goal performance, on the team-leading 24th assist of the season by Devlin.

Junior goalkeeper Ashley Bastinelli played brilliantly for the Commodores, making 10 saves and coming out of the cage to cause three ND turnovers and pick up two ground balls. But the VU attack managed only 13 shots to Notre Dame’s 25 shots.

With her five-point performance, Roguski moved into fourth place all-time in career points at Vanderbilt with 135. She passed Andrea Legath (1996-99), who stands fifth with 130 points. Roguski also moved to third all-time at VU in goals scored, with 111. April Tellam (1998-2001) netted 110 goals in her VU career.

Vanderbilt will make its second NCAA Tournament appearance on Thursday, May 13. The entire NCAA bracket will be revealed on Sunday, May 9, at 5:30 p.m. CT on CSTV. Information will be available immediately following the show on ncaasports.com and at vucommodores.com.
