Vanderbilt Men’s Basketball Inks Metcalfe and Nwankwo During Spring Signing Period Vanderbilt Head Coach Kevin Stallings announced today that two student-athletes, Davis Nwankwo and Alan Metcalfe, have signed national letters of intent to attend Vanderbilt and play for the Commodores’ 2004-2005 men’s basketball squad “We are very excited that Davis and Alan will be joining our program,” Stallings said. “They will provide us additional help at the post positions and fill the need we had entering the spring signing period.” As a senior, Nwankwo averaged 13 points, 11 rebounds and four assists for Georgetown Preparatory School in College Park, Md. Nwankwo, a 6-9, 220-pound forward lifted the private school to its first Interstate Athletic Conference championship in 15 years. The Little Hoyas registered a 20-6 record for the 2003-04 campaign and have earned a 76-25 record during Nwankwo’s four-year career. He has been named First Team All-IAC three times and First Team All-County twice. “Davis is a very athletic player,” Stallings said. “His strengths are his ability to score inside and rebound. His high level of athleticism also allows him to be a very good defender.” Metcalfe attended Virginia’s Notre Dame Academy during his senior year after coming to the United States from Liverpool, England. The 6-9, 230 pound forward/center averaged 12 points and seven rebounds per contest for the private school in Middleburg, Va. Metcalfe helped guide Notre Dame Academy to a 20-8 record and the Virginia Independent Schools state championship. “Alan is a foreign player who comes to Vanderbilt a year older than most incoming freshmen. He is also a mobile player who shows an exceptional shooting touch with three-point shooting range and then some,” Stallings said. “Similar to Matt Freije, he may be able to play inside and outside.” The two spring signees will join forward DeMarre Carroll (Birmingham, Ala./John Carroll), forward Shan Foster (Kenner, La./Bonnabel) and guard Alex Gordon (Pensacola, Fla./Pensacola), who signed with the Commodores last fall. “We were able to address a lot of our needs in the incoming freshman class,” Stallings said. “We think we have an incoming player at each position who, over the course of their career, will make very positive contributions.” |
