No. 24 Vanderbilt Loses To No. 19 Florida, 3-2, in 10 Innings 4/25/2004
Vanderbilt Defeats Lipscomb, 12-1 4-27-04 Nashville, Tenn. — Ryan Klosterman hit his first career grand slam and eight Commodore pitchers combined for a five-hitter in a 12-1 Vanderbilt victory over Lipscomb at Dugan Field. The Commodores improved to 28-13 and exceeded last season’s victory total of 27, while Lipscomb is 12-27. Lipscomb scored one run in the bottom of the first when Brent Hastings scored on a single by Kyle Jackson. Vanderbilt then answered with five runs in the second inning. Cesar Nicolas drew a walk and moved to second on a wild pitch. Worth Scott reached on an error by second baseman Aaron Crawford with Nicolas moving the third. Aaron Garza then collected his 23rd RBI of the season with a single to left center scoring Nicolas. Antoan Richardson drew a walk and with two away and bases loaded, Klosterman took the first pitch over the left center field wall. It was the first Commodore grand slam since May 12, 2002, when Karl Nonemaker hit one vs. Kentucky. “He (David Ayre) had just walked the previous guy, so I figured he was going to try to come with a fast ball on the first pitch to get ahead,” Klosterman said. “I put a pretty good swing on it and it got up in the wind and just went (over the fence).” Vanderbilt extended its lead to 8-1 in the third inning scoring three runs. Warner Jones led off the inning with a walk and scored when Nicolas hit a double to left center field. Tony Mansolino hit a single up the middle moving Nicolas to third. Scott singled to right field scoring Nicolas and advancing Mansolino to second. Mansolino then scored when Matt McGraner grounded into a double play by the Bisons. The Commodores added one more in the third inning. Klosterman drew a walk and moved to second on a wild pitch. Mike Baxter walked and Jones reached on a fielder’s choice with Klosterman out at third. Jones moved to second and Baxter moved to third on a wild pitch and Nicolas hit a sacirifice fly to center field scoring Baxter Vanderbilt scored its final three runs in the sixth inning. Scott reached on an error by first baseman Kyle Jackson and moved to second when Garza drew a walk. Matt McGraner drew a walk to load the bases with no outs. Richardson hit a sacrifice fly to center field scoring Scott. Klosterman then flew out to center fielder Nick Cleckler, but Garza and McGraner advanced on a throwing error by Cleckler. Baxter then singled to the shortstop scoring both Garza and McGraner. The Commodores totaled eight hits and a season-high eight walks in the game with Lipscomb committing three errors. “We hit the ball relatively well,” Vanderbilt Head Coach Tim Corbin said. “It (the scoreboard) only showed eight hits, but I thought there were about nine balls that were hit hard and we took advantage of some walks.” Freshman Tyler Rhoden earned his first collegiate win. Rhoden started the contest and went two inning giving up the one run on four hits. Michael Wagner, Stephen Shao, Jeff Sues, Blake Owen, Nick Pilkington, Jeremy Sowers and Ryan Rote each pitched one inning and allowed one hit between them. After Lipscomb’s lead off hitter reached on a single in the second inning, the Vanderbilt hurlers retired 16 consecutive batters before Nathan Sensing reached base after being hit by a pitch (Pilkington). “I’m very pleased with the pitching,” Corbin added. “Our pitchers threw a lot of fast balls and breaking balls for strikes, so that was good to see. Other than Sowers (Jeremy) and Rote (Ryan), we had a lot of young arms out there. Any time you get young kids who don’t get a lot of mound time during the weekend to get in there and throw consistently – that’s nice to see.” Lipscomb’s David Ayre picked up his first loss of the season (4-1). He gave up eight runs (four earned) on four hits while striking out three and walking three. The Commodores return to SEC action this weekend when they host Mississippi State Friday at 7 pm, Saturday and 4 pm and Sunday at 1 pm (April 30, May 1, May 2). RADIO/TV NOTE: |
