No. 10 VU Women’s Lacrosse Fall In Sudden Victory Period to Hofstra, 14-13 4-24-04 4/24/2004 HEMPSTEAD, NY — Despite six goals from senior Tewaaraton Trophy nominee Michelle Allen, the 10th-ranked Vanderbilt women’s lacrosse team fell victim to Hofstra, 14-13, on a sudden victory goal in the 67th minue of the match, played at the James H. Shuart Stadium Saturday. With the loss, the Commodores fall to 9-4 on the season with only two matches remaining on the regular season schedule. Vanderbilt opened scoring when Allen found the back of the net only 24 seconds into the match. But Hofstra roared back with a trio of goals to take a 3-1 lead in the eighth minute. Despite another goal from Allen and scores from senior Jess Roguski and junior Meg Spies, the Pride would open up a 7-4 lead before halftime on a three seconds remaining in the period. The Commodores fought back in the second stanza, scoring four of the half’s first five goals. Senior Kelly Devlin started the rally in the 35th minute, and goals by Roguski, sophomore Kate Hickman and Allen tied the game, 8-8, at the 42:01 mark. Only 28 seconds later, Hofstra would answer to again take the lead. A pair of goals from Hickman capped her hat-trick and gave Vanderbilt its first lead, 10-9, since the second minute of the match. The Commodores were unable to keep the Pride away from the cage, as Hofstra scored twice more to again gain an advantage. Allen controlled the ensuing draw and raced down field to score her fourth goal of the day, tying the match at 11-11. The two teams traded goals in the 59th minute and regulation ended in a 12-12 tie. Allen, who scored VU’s final three goals over an eight minute span, gave the Commodores the lead in the 61st minute with her sixth goal of the game. The Commodores weathered the next two minutes of overtime before the teams switched sides. The Pride were able to gain possession on a VU turnover in the waning moments of the game, and HU’s Tara Buecker found Jaime Basile for the game-tying goal with only one second remaining in overtime. In the sudden victory period, Hofstra gained control of the first draw and Buecker scored her fifth of the game at the 66:50 mark to vanquish the stunned Commodores. Vanderbilt will have one week off before closing out the 2004 regular season with a trip north to ALC-foe Northwestern and nationally-ranked Notre Dame in the first weekend in May. |
