No. 21 VU Men’s Tennis Takes On South Carolina In SEC First Round NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The 21st-ranked Vanderbilt men’s tennis team, the seventh seed in the 2004 Southeastern Conference Men’s Tennis Tournament, will take on No. 44 South Carolina in first round action at the Brownlee O. Currey Jr. Tennis Center Thursday. The Commodores (14-10) are the defending SEC Tournament champions, and would play the team they beat for that crown, Florida, in Friday’s quarterfinal round with a win on Thursday. That defense will not be easy, as the Commodores are the seventh seed in the draw. Top-seeded Ole Miss, second-seeded Florida, third-seeded Georgia and fourth-seeded Kentucky have all received byes from Thursday’s first round of play, and will begin their weekend on Friday by pairing up against Thursday’s winners. South Carolina will be attempting to avenge a loss to Vanderbilt from the first weekend of March. In 2002, the Gamecocks handed Arkansas a 4-2 loss in the first round of the conference tournament, paying UA pack for its 4-3 regular season win. Vanderbilt needed a pair of three-set singles victories to put USC away in March, 6-1. The SEC Tournament will begin at 8 a.m. CT when fifth-seeded LSU takes on 12th-seeded Alabama. That match will be followed by a contest between eighth-seeded Auburn and ninth-seeded Arkansas that is scheduled to begin sometime after 9:45 a.m. (approximately 45 minutes after singles in underway in the previous match). Sixth-seeded Tennessee will then take on 11th-seeded Mississippi State no earlier than 11:30 a.m., before Vanderbilt and South Carolina wrap up the first round with a match that is scheduled to begin “not before” 1:15 p.m. SEC Men’s Tennis Tournament Thursday, April 22 Friday, April 23 Saturday, April 27 Sunday, April 25 All Times Central.
