No. 10 VU Lacrosse Defeats Conference Rival Ohio State, 12-9 4-18-04

4/18/2004

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The 10th-ranked Vanderbilt women’s lacrosse team celebrated “Senior Day” with a 12-9 victory over American Lacrosse Conference rival Ohio State at the Vanderbilt Lacrosse Complex Sunday. Senior Kelly Devlin led the Commodores (9-3, 4-1 ALC) with six points on the afternoon, including three assists to sophomore Kate Hickman.

Commodore fans honored VU’s nine-member senior class prior to Sunday’s match. The pre-game festivities gave way to a contest of heated rivals, in which Vanderbilt was able to get the better of Ohio State.

Vanderbilt entered the match still in the hunt for the ALC title with only one conference loss on the season and looked determined to take control of the game early. Senior Michelle Allen scored in the third minute of the match to set the tone for the Commodores. Hickman then scored her first of four goals off an assist from Devlin in the seventh minute.

Ohio State would tie the game at 2-2, scoring twice in the 12th minute of the match. But a three-goal run by Vanderbilt, including a tally by senior Lauren Peck and two from Devlin, gave the Commodores a little breathing room. The Buckeyes only managed to score once more in the half, and a pair of Devlin-to-Hickman connections gave VU a 7-3 lead at the break.

Allen opened the second half just as she had the first, scoring less than a minute into the period. The Buckeyes fought back to within three goals in the 44th minute, scoring twice before and once after Hickman’s fourth goal of the game.

Ohio State’s run was squashed by senior Jess Roguski, who scored her second of two goals, less than a minute apart, at the 49:24 mark. Junior Meg Spies gave the Dores their biggest lead of the afternoon, 12-6, with an unassisted goal in the 52nd minute.

The Buckeyes controlled the next two draws and were able to score, but Vanderbilt then took possession and began to drain the clock. Senior goalkeeper Liz Exline stepped between the pipes in the closing minutes of the match and made a stick save to thwart an OSU free position shot and give the Commodores their final 12-9 tally.

The Commodores will travel next weekend to face Hofstra on Saturday, April 24, at 11 a.m. CT. Vanderbilt will close out the regular season with a road trip to No. 11 Northwestern and No. 3 Notre Dame, May 6-8.
