Schneble, Debbie Huss Pace First-Day Commodore Effort In Vanderbilt Track and Field Invitational 4/16/2004 NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Individual event wins by sophomore Erika Schneble and freshman Debbie Huss sparked the Commodores’ team effort Friday during the first day of competition at the Vanderbilt Track and Field Invitational. Schneble, who set a team record a week ago in the 5,000-meter run, led an impressive contingent of Commodores in the 1,500-meter run. Schneble qualified for the NCAA Regionals, running the distance in 4:25.82. She also became the fourth fastest Vanderbilt runner ever at the distance. Freshman Ashleigh Wetzel pushed Schneble much of the way, finishing second in the personal best 4:29.31. Huss followed Schneble’s effort with an outdoor personal best in the 3,000-meter run, winning the event in 10:07.25. The competition, which includes men and women’s divisions, continues Saturday with field events starting at 10 a.m. The first event on the track starts at 12 noon. Schneble, a native of Hendersonville, N.C., is currently running at an all-time level. Last week, she lowered the Vanderbilt 5,000-meter mark by more than 20 seconds. She continued her excellent form Friday, pushing the early pace with Wetzel and sophomore Alisa Cotter, then closing with a strong kick to win comfortably. Schneble’s performance knocked nearly six seconds off her previous best at the distance. Schneble and Wetzel were joined by a host of Commodores with excellent performances in the 1,500. Three teammates – Cotter, sophomore Caitlin Shannon and senior Jocelyn Theriault – finished fourth, fifth and sixth, all running under 4:39. In other action involving Commodores: |
