No. 10 VU Lacrosse Holds Off Ohio, 12-11 4-16-04

4/16/2004

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Five goals and two assists from senior Lauren Peck propelled the 10th-ranked Vanderbilt women’s lacrosse team to a 12-11 victory over American Lacrosse Conference rival Ohio University at the Vanderbilt Lacrosse Complex Friday.

The Commodores held Ohio to only three goals in the first half, and then held off a late Bobcat charge to slip away with the narrow victory. Senior Michelle Allen added six points to the VU cause on a pair of goals and four assists.

Allen had two goals in the game’s first two minutes to give the Commodores an early lead they would cling to throughout the match. Vanderbilt built to an 7-3 halftime advantage on a Peck hat-trick and goals from junior Meg Spies and sophomore Kate Hickman, the reigning ALC Player of the Week.

In the second half, the teams traded goals before Vanderbilt expanded its lead to 12-6 with 21 minutes remaining on goals from Peck, Spies and seniors Kelly Devlin and Jess Roguski. From there, the Commodore offense would go flat, missing their final eight shots and failing to score for the remainder of the match.

The Bobcats would pull within a goal, 12-11, at the 58:25 mark, but were unable to tie the game. Allen caused a turnover with just over a minute to go in the match and the Commodores were able to waste the rest of the clock.

A number of VU defenders had big days, as junior Kim Gianis led the way with three caused turnovers and five ground balls. Freshman Molly Frew also caused three turnovers and added the first assist of her collegiate career. Senior Christiana Serle picked up four ground balls and had a pair of caused turnovers.

The Commodores (8-3, 3-1 ALC) remain at home through the weekend and face ALC-rival Ohio State on Sunday, April 18, at 1 p.m. for “Senior Day” at the VU Lacrosse Complex.
