VU Women’s Tennis: Schmandt Named to SEC Good Works Team

4/14/2004

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Vanderbilt senior Kelly Schmandt was one of 12 student-athletes named to the 2004 Southeastern Conference Women’s Tennis Good Works Team Wednesday. The league sponsors a Good Works Team for each of its 20 sports to highlight student-athletes from each school who give back to their community in superior service efforts.

Schmandt, a native of Santa Barbara, Calif., has worked diligently with Vanderbilt’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee in the planning and implementation of numerous community service activities, including the annual Christmas Party and Kid’s Zone. Each Christmas, VU student-athletes raise funds to purchase presents for local kids and then invite them to campus for a party. At Commodore football games, the Kid’s Zone is another opportunity for student-athletes to interact with local youth.

A public policy major, Schmandt also is quite active in a number of other organizations around campus. As a member of the Sierra Club, she has promoted the movement to investigate the viability of using more green power sources on campus.

Schmandt also has organized a number of voter registration drives and volunteered for the Living Wage Club, which advocates more realistic standards of living for low-wage individuals and families.
