Freije Named Bayer Advantage Senior CLASS First Team All-American 4/13/2004
Freije Named Bayer Advantage Senior CLASS First Team All-American Vanderbilt senior forward Matt Freije recently has been named a Senior CLASS First Team All-American. The Senior CLASS Award — an acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School — honors the nation’s top college basketball seniors. St. Joseph’s Jameer Nelson earned the top individual honor. Other first team selections were Kentucky’s Gerald Fitch, Duke’s Chris Duhon and Gonzaga’s Blake Stepp. Freije averaged 18.4 points and 5.4 rebounds during his senior campaign while becoming Vanderbilt’s all-time leading scorer (1,891 points). The Overland Park, Kan., native helped the Commodores (23-10) advance to the Phoenix Regional Semifinal of the NCAA Tournament before falling to eventual national champion Connecticut. National balloting was conducted during March by three separate voting entities — a National Media Committee that covers college basketball, Division I college basketball coaches, and nationwide fan balloting. The names of 10 finalists, which were selected from a list of 30 nominees, appeared on the final ballot. A points system combined the votes for these groups and determined the national winner of the Bayer Advantage Senior CLASS Award. Based on results from the balloting, the SCA Organizing Committee announced the men’s All-Senior All-America Team for 2003-04. The third annual Senior CLASS Award will culminate with the CLASS Tribute Gala in Kansas City, Mo., on May 7. Dick Enberg will serve as Master of Ceremonies. |
