NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The 22nd-ranked Vanderbilt men’s tennis team dropped a 4-3 decision to 27th-ranked Tulane at the Brownlee O. Currey Jr. Tennis Center Sunday. The Commodores dropped the doubles point and were then unable to win the necessary four singles matches.

Vanderbilt’s doubles team of seniors Zach Dailey and Lew Smith won at second doubles over Tulane’s Vasiljevic and Angelinos, 8-3, but the Green Wave took matches at first and third doubles to snag the initial team point.

The Commodores attempted to mount a comeback, as VU junior Matt Lockin was the first winner in singles. Lockin defeated David Goulet at fourth singles to tie the match at 1-1.

But straight-set losses at second and fifth singles put the Commodores in a 3-1 hole. Freshman Nathan Sachs took a 6-4, 6-2 decision from Hanno Piiroinen at sixth singles to pull the Commodores within a point.

The match was decided at first singles, where Tulane’s Michael Kogan defeated Commodore junior Scott Brown, 6-2, 6-4. Dailey would capture the Dores’ third and final point with a win at third singles.

Vanderbilt will end the regular season next Sunday, April 18, playing host to Southeastern Conference rival Mississippi State at Belmont University. The Commodores will then play host to the 2004 SEC Championships, April 22-25, at the Currey Tennis Center.
