No. 10 VU Women’s Lacrosse Comes Alive, Defeats North Carolina, 12-8 4-10-04

4/10/2004

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — Four goals each from senior Lauren Peck and sophomore Kate Hickman propelled the 10th-ranked Vanderbilt women’s lacrosse team to a 12-8 win over 15th-ranked North Carolina at Henry Stadium Friday. Commodore senior Kelly Devlin led the team in points, with two goals and four assists, on the way to Vanderbilt’s first win over Carolina in nine tries.

Junior goalkeeper Ashley Bastinelli has an outstanding game for the Commodores, making eight saves while also corralling two ground balls and causing one turnover. Bastinelli played behind a tough Commodore defense, which did not allow a UNC goal for nearly 20 minutes in the second half. Junior Kim Gianis and seniors Bridget Morris and Christiana Serle each picked up three ground balls and combined for four caused turnovers.

Offensively, the Commodores made 12 of 22 shots, including a 4-of-4 performance by Peck, who was faced guarded the entire match by UNC’s Julie Gladchuk but still managed five points. Devlin also made both of her shots, beating defenders in 1-v-1 situations by going to her left hand.

North Carolina won draw controls early in game, but the Commodores fought back by causing UNC turnovers and jumping on every loose ball. Vanderbilt led the Tar Heels in ground balls, 19-9.

The Commodores scored their first goal of the day in the third minute, when a caused turnover by Gianis was converted to a VU goal by senior Michelle Allen. Peck would score Vanderbilt’s next two goals off ground balls from Bastinelli and Morris. The Dores took a 3-1 lead in the sixth minute when Peck beat UNC goalkeeper Kristen Hordy with a behind-the-back shot off a Devlin assist.

Vanderbilt led for the final 56 minutes of the game, stretching its lead every time Carolina tried to make a run. Hickman and senior Jess Roguski would both score in the middle of the first half before Peck finished off a hat-trick in the 24th minute. A Carolina goal in the 26th minute, their third free position goal of the first half, pulled UNC within one at the break, 6-5.

But the Commodores came out of halftime on fire. Vanderbilt would score the first five goals of the second half to put the game away. VU senior Joanna Mooney won the first draw of the second half and Hickman turned the statistic into points in the 32nd minute, scoring off a Peck feed.

Devlin added the next two Commodore goals with a show of ambidextrous skill before another pair of goals by Hickman, her third and fourth of the game, gave Vanderbilt an 11-5 lead with 11 minutes to play. The Tar Heels tried to claw back into the match, pulling within three goals at the 56:33 mark, but Devlin again found Peck on a breakaway in the final minute of the match to ice the 12-8 victory.

Vanderbilt (6-3, 1-1 American Lacrosse Conference) continues its swing through the state of North Carolina with a match at league-rival Davidson on Sunday, April 11, at Noon EST.
