Vanderbilt Pitcher Jeremy Sowers Named to Golden Spikes Award Watch List

Vanderbilt junior left-handed pitcher Jeremy Sowers has been named to the 2004 Golden Spikes Award List. He is one of 30 players on the list and one of five players from the Southeastern Conference.

Sowers leads the Commodores with a 5-1 record and 2.81 ERA. He has pitched a team-high 48 innings while giving up 16 runs (15 earned) on 40 hits. He totals a team-high 51 strikeouts and has walked only five. He pitched his first complete game of the season last Friday (April 2) – a 6-2 victory over #6 South Carolina.

As part of their continuing efforts to salute amateur baseball excellence, USA Baseball – in partnership with the Major League Baseball Players Association – presents the 2004 Golden Spikes Award, amateur baseball’s most prestigous honor. Recognized as one of the most revered trophies in amateur sport, the presentation of the Golden Spikes Award also underscores the commitment of USA Baseball and Major League baseball players to support the development of baseball from the grassroots level. The Golden Spikes Award has been presented for the past 26 years with the first ever presentation of the Award going to Bob Horner of Arizona State in 1978. The Golden Spikes Award has been presented each year to the player who exhibits exceptional athletic ability and exemplary sportsmanship.

USA Baseball will announce their five finalists for the 2004 Golden Spikes Award in June.
