Vanderbilt Women’s Tennis Moves Up To No. 3 In Latest National Poll 4/6/2004 Intercollegiate Tennis Association rewards Commodores for two strong conference wins over weekend NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Having posted a pair of impressive Southeastern Conference wins over Tennessee and then-No. 4 Georgia last weekend, the Vanderbilt women’s tennis team moved up two places to No. 3 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s latest national poll. The Commodores last reached No. 3 in the nation, their highest ranking ever, in April, 2001. They capped that impressive season by becoming the first Vanderbilt team to advance to the championship match of the NCAA Tournament. This season, the Commodores have compiled a 19-2 record, including a 9-1 mark in the Southeastern Conference. Vanderbilt will close out the 2004 regular season with a match against Kentucky at the Brownlee O. Currey Jr. Tennis Center in Nashville on Saturday, April 10, at Noon CT, before playing host to the 2004 SEC Tournament, April 15-18. Junior Audra Falk, who has registered seven straight wins for the Commodores at first singles, also moved up in the ranking, jumping 13 places to No. 14 in the country. She is followed closely by senior Kelly Schmandt, who is currently the nation’s 40th-ranked singles player. Schmandt and fellow-senior Aleke Tsoubanos remained steady as the No. 3 doubles pair in the country. In the team rankings, Vanderbilt stands behind only No. 1 Stanford and No. 2 Florida in the ITA poll. Following the third-ranked Commodores are No. 4 Duke and No. 5 Georgia. Washington, UCLA, Southern Cal, Northwestern and Fresno State round out the top 10. The other SEC schools represented in the nation’s top 25 are No. 20 LSU, No. 21 Kentucky and No. 24 Tennessee. |
